Choosing a family photographer in Düsseldorf is partly choosing a place that suits your children. Families who have moved here for work, often with grandparents far away, tend to want photographs that show the city they now live in without dragging everyone across town. The Hofgarten works for the centre and Pempelfort: mature trees, open lawns and plenty of shade. On the left bank, the Rhine meadows at Oberkassel give space to run and a view back towards the old town. Families in Meerbusch or Ratingen have closer parks again. In summer, early evening is best: the heat has eased and the light is lower, but it is not so late that small children fall apart. Mornings also work in the Hofgarten, where the trees give shade. Autumn brings colour to the park and fewer people on the meadows. In winter the early sunset, around half past four, puts the warm light neatly after an afternoon nap, which often makes it the easiest slot of the year.

The first minutes belong to the children — running, looking for ducks, collecting sticks — and we photograph as it happens. The one posed group photograph comes once everyone has settled, not at the start. Seventy-five minutes allows for a break, a snack and a change of scene within the park.     Two kilometres of plane trees with steps down to the water, open to the west. This is the one place on the Rhine where the sun sets over the river instead of behind a building, and on a summer evening several thousand people are sitting on those steps from seven.

    Three curved blocks, one of them in polished steel that reflects whatever stands in front of it. On a weekday this is office traffic; in the evening and at the weekend it is empty — and that is the difference between a portrait and a portrait with forty passers-by in it.

    Hofgarten und Schloss Jägerhof

    The oldest public park in Germany: mature trees, a pond, and a small rococo palace at the edge of it. Five minutes on foot from the Königsallee and still quiet — the default for family and maternity sessions when the brief is green.

    Two hundred and forty metres with a light sculpture that tells the time, and the curved parliament building on the water in front of it. From the bank you get both plus the Rheinknie bridge in one frame — a subject that only works after sunset.

Questions

Grandparents are visiting from abroad for a week. Can we fit around that?

Yes. Send us the dates when you enquire and we will suggest two possible evenings, so the weather does not decide for us. For larger groups we take the posed photograph a little earlier, while everyone is fresh, and then let the children move freely for the rest of the session.

Is the Hofgarten busy at weekends?

It has walkers and joggers, but it is large enough to find quiet corners even on a Sunday. We choose angles where the background is trees and water rather than people. If you would like a calmer park, a weekday evening is the easier choice.

What if it is windy or raining?

Light drizzle is often fine with coats and wellies, and it gives livelier pictures. In steady rain or strong wind we talk the day before and agree a new date by phone or email. The open promenade is exposed in wind, so the more sheltered Hofgarten becomes the first choice.
