Why proposal session in Düsseldorf
A proposal photographer in Düsseldorf is mostly solving one problem: how to keep a public place private. The obvious setting is the Rhine promenade, where the river runs west and the sun goes down over the water. The difficulty is everyone else who knows that. On a summer evening the steps fill with people, and a proposal in the middle of them becomes a performance. So the spot is chosen carefully: a quieter stretch towards the Rheinturm, somewhere with a clean background that can be seen clearly from a distance. If you would rather avoid an audience altogether, the Hofgarten in the morning or the Gehry buildings in the Medienhafen after office hours are calmer. The place should look ordinary enough that nobody suspects a thing.
The hour before sunset is the classic slot — late in the evening in June, much earlier by October. Weekdays are better than weekends, when the promenade is at its busiest. In winter, blue hour among the floodlit Medienhafen facades comes early and makes a quieter alternative. If you are visiting Düsseldorf, book before you travel so the location and signal can be agreed well in advance rather than on the day.
How the session runs
Beforehand we agree the place, the time and a signal that tells us it is happening. On the day we arrive early and wait thirty to fifty metres away with a long lens and nothing that looks like professional kit. You bring your partner to the agreed point as if by chance. Once the question is asked, we walk over, offer congratulations and spend 30 minutes on couple portraits nearby, on the steps to the water or under the plane trees. A first set reaches you the same evening, out of 35 edited photographs.
