Hiring a family photographer in Stuttgart means working with the city's shape as much as with the children. The centre sits in a basin that traps summer heat, and down there the sun disappears behind the slope earlier in the evening. The higher ground keeps the light longer and usually offers more space. That makes Killesberg park an obvious choice for many families: lawns, shade, play areas and a lookout tower that gives children a goal. Families who have moved to the region for work often live further out, in Böblingen, Sindelfingen or Ludwigsburg, and a park close to home works just as well there. What matters is that children do not arrive after a long drive.

From June to August, late afternoon or a morning before the heat builds is best. September and October are comfortable, and the park turns colour. For young children we plan around the afternoon nap; in winter, the early sunset makes that easy. If fog lies over the city, we move the meeting point uphill rather than cancelling, because the slopes above are often in sun.

How the session runs

We meet at a park entrance and let the children settle first — running across the lawns, finding the flower terraces, looking up at the tower. We photograph as it happens. The one posed group photograph comes once everyone is relaxed, with the park behind you. We only climb the tower if the children are old enough and keen, as it noticeably moves. After seventy-five minutes you are done, and 40 edited photographs follow in a private gallery within 48 to 72 hours.

    Grabkapelle auf dem Württemberg

    A neoclassical rotunda at four hundred metres, rows of vines all round it and the whole Neckar valley below. The one place around Stuttgart where architecture, vineyard and a view fall into a single frame — and it is open to the west, so you keep the sun to the end.

    Stäffele am Eugensplatz

    The best known of Stuttgart’s eight hundred flights, looking out over the roofs and down into the bowl. It is steep enough that every step gives a different camera height and narrow enough that a session runs here without an audience.

    The city’s grand square, with its column, its fountains and the palace facade behind. It is wide and open, so merciless at midday and good in the morning — and from ten it is the thoroughfare for half the centre.

    Killesbergturm und Höhenpark

    A forty-metre cable-net tower that visibly moves as you climb it, in a park of lawns and flower terraces. For families it is the most practical address in the city: space, shade, somewhere for children to be, and a subject within walking distance.

    Weinberge Rotenberg und Uhlbach

    Steep slopes above the Neckar, twelve minutes from the main station on the S-Bahn. The tracks between the parcels are public; the rows themselves are not — which is not a formality but the difference between a welcome visitor and damage to someone’s vines.

Questions

Is there enough shade at Killesberg in summer?

Yes, there are mature trees and shaded paths that we use deliberately on hot days. Midday light is still harsh, so in high summer we recommend a later afternoon slot. Bring water and sun protection for the children, as it stays warm even in the shade.

Can the session take place in our garden in Böblingen?

Yes. Böblingen is within the area we cover, and a garden is a good setting because children are relaxed at home. Clear away toys and garden furniture you do not want in the frame, and let us know if a neighbour's house stands directly behind, so we can plan angles.

We have a new baby and a toddler. Will that work outdoors?

It will, with some planning. We choose a sheltered, shady spot, lay a blanket on the grass and build in breaks for feeding. While the baby sleeps, we photograph the toddler with a parent, so no time is lost. Summer afternoons and winter middays tend to be the most comfortable.
