Why family session in Lake Constance
Families who book a family photographer on Lake Constance are often on holiday, or visiting grandparents who live by the water, and the lake does half the work of keeping children busy: pebbles, shallow water, ducks and passing boats. The difficulty is the light. With the lake behind them, a family faces into the sun, and in a group of five people of different heights some faces quickly fall into shadow. So on the lake we usually photograph families side-on to the water, or facing the shore rather than standing in front of it, and take the single posed group photograph where the light falls on faces. For space instead of a promenade, the orchard meadows on the Höri peninsula give children room to run.
In summer the lakeside towns are busy and the sun is high during the day, so we plan for late afternoon, after naps. April brings early blossom to the Höri orchards, and October has mild evenings and empty paths. During the German school summer holidays, free dates are scarce, so book a few weeks ahead if your trip falls then.
How the session runs
We meet at a stretch of shore with gentle access to the water, or at the edge of an orchard meadow on the Höri, whichever is nearer your accommodation. The posed group photograph comes first, with light on faces. After that the children throw pebbles, paddle and run through the grass while the camera follows. Bring a change of clothes for the youngest. Seventy-five minutes in total, and forty edited photographs in a private gallery within 48 to 72 hours.
