Why family session in Heidelberg

A family photographer in Heidelberg works with two quite different groups: families who live in the area, often connected to the university or the research institutes, and families visiting for a weekend or a reunion. For both, the old town is too crowded for small children during the day. The Neckarwiese on the north bank, by contrast, is broad and open, with the castle across the river. In the evening it fills with students, and precisely because of that nobody pays attention to a family being photographed. For something greener and a little higher, the castle gardens have paths and lawns where visitors spread out. The steep Philosophenweg suits older children who enjoy a climb rather than toddlers.

Book after the afternoon nap, and in summer towards early evening when the heat in the valley eases. From late October to mid-November Heidelberg is quieter and full of colour. Saturdays in May and June are very busy in town, so a Sunday morning or a weekday after nursery is calmer. A few weeks’ notice is usually enough.

How the session runs

We meet somewhere reachable with a pushchair, usually on the north bank. On the Neckarwiese children can run, collect stones and watch the ducks while the photographer captures what happens. The one posed group photograph with the castle behind comes early, while patience lasts. For a second backdrop we walk a few minutes along the bank towards the old bridge. Bring snacks and spare clothes. The gallery of 40 edited photographs follows within 48 to 72 hours.

    Philosophenweg

    The view the town is known for: castle, old bridge and old town on a single line, from above and across the river. It faces south, so it is right in the afternoon and exactly wrong in the morning.

    Alte Brücke

    A baroque sandstone bridge with a gate tower, occupied by groups by the minute from ten. The one hour in which it is yours is before eight — after that every frame is a frame with strangers in it.

    Schlossgarten und Altan

    The terrace on the Altan looks straight over the old town and down the valley — the view Turner painted. The garden in front of it is broad enough to step out of the flow of visitors, which the courtyard itself does not allow.

    Neckarwiese

    A kilometre of riverside meadow on the north bank with the castle on the far side. Half the student body sits here in the evening, and that is exactly what makes it the least self-conscious place in town — nobody looks when somebody is being photographed.

    Heiliggeistkirche und Marktplatz

    Red sandstone over a square tight enough that the facade throws the light back. For a church wedding it is the central address in the old town; for anything else, early Sunday is worth it, before the market stalls and the terraces take the square.

Questions

Can we bring a pushchair?

Yes, the Neckarwiese and the riverside paths are easy with one. The Schlangenweg up to the Philosophenweg is all steps, so a carrier is better there. The castle gardens can also be reached by the funicular. We choose the location based on what you are bringing.

We are visiting relatives in Heidelberg. Can everyone be in the photos?

Of course. We start with the full group photograph and a few combinations — grandparents with grandchildren, siblings together — before moving on to looser frames. Let us know how many people are coming, so the location has room and nobody has to stand for long.

What if our child refuses to cooperate?

Then we let it be. Seventy-five minutes allows for a stretch of resistance, and on an open meadow something usually draws children back into play. In our experience the usable frames tend to come in the second half, once the camera is no longer new.
