Why family session in Dresden

Dresden has a great deal of green space that does not look staged, which makes things easy for a family photographer in Dresden. A family session here has no need of the baroque skyline. What it needs is room for children to run and light that suits the hour, and the city has both: the Elbe meadows, green and wide in May and June, and the Großer Garten, large enough to find a quiet corner even on a Sunday. The package includes one location chosen for where you live, so Radebeul with its vineyards, Moritzburg or Pirna are equally possible. What matters is that nobody spends half an hour in the car first, because children’s patience does not survive that.

The Elbe meadows are at their best in May and June, and the light is clearest in September and October. High summer gets hot in Dresden, so a morning or a late afternoon in the shade of the Großer Garten is wiser. In winter the session sits around midday. For spring and autumn weekends, ask a few weeks ahead.

How the session runs

We meet at a place that suits where you live. The one posed group photograph comes first, while everyone is fresh. After that the children play and run, and the camera follows them. On the Elbe meadows paddle steamers pass behind; in the Großer Garten there are long avenues and lawns. If you would like the Radebeul vineyards, we keep to the public paths. We stop after 75 minutes; forty edited frames from the park or riverbank are in your gallery two to three days later.

    Neustädter Elbufer, Canaletto-Blick

    The meadow opposite the old town, from which the whole silhouette fits into one frame. It sits lower than the terrace across the water, so you get river in the foreground, and it is wide enough that a wedding party is in nobody’s way.

    Zwingerhof

    A baroque courtyard with the crown gate, the rampart pavilion and the nymph bath, and in the morning it is genuinely empty. The courtyard itself is freely accessible; the moment the work is commercial or moves into the galleries, the state collections’ rules apply.

    Brühlsche Terrasse

    The "balcony of Europe": five hundred metres of raised walk above the Elbe with a staircase down to the Schlossplatz. From here you see the Neustadt rather than the old town — the counterpart to the Canaletto view, and in the morning it is the side with the light on it.

    Kunsthofpassage, Äußere Neustadt

    Five designed courtyards, among them the "courtyard of the elements" with drainpipes that play when it rains. This is the counterweight to the baroque old town, and the best place in Dresden for a session that should not look historical.

    Schloss und Park Pillnitz

    A summer palace in chinoiserie style right on the Elbe, ten kilometres upstream and reachable by paddle steamer. The park is large, kept and markedly quieter than anything in the centre — the address for a wedding party that needs room.

Questions

Which Dresden location suits small children?

The Großer Garten, because it is spacious, shady and well away from traffic. The Elbe meadows are good too, as long as nobody makes a run for the water. We are reluctant to suggest the old town for toddlers, since the crowds mean someone is always walking into the frame.

We moved to Dresden recently. Can the session be in English?

Yes, entirely. The planning, the session itself and every message can be in English. Tell us which district you live in when you enquire and we will suggest a couple of nearby locations, since the package is built around somewhere close to home.

Can we do the session at Pillnitz Palace?

Yes, with two caveats. The park charges admission per person, and commercial photography needs permission in advance, which we obtain. For something simpler, the public riverbank outside the park works well too and needs no permission.
