Why family session in Berlin

Booking a family photographer in Berlin is really a decision about how far your children should travel. Forty minutes on the S-Bahn with a toddler usually means the best mood of the day is spent on a platform. So the location is chosen around where you live rather than around what is famous. Berlin makes that easier than most cities: almost every neighbourhood has a park, a playground or a stretch of water within a short walk. In Prenzlauer Berg that could be the grassy slope around the water tower, in Kreuzberg the Viktoriapark with its waterfall, in Treptow the woodland of the Plänterwald. Children who know a place move through it with confidence, and that movement is what the pictures are made of.

Plan the session around naps first and light second. In summer, late afternoon works well: the sun is lower but children are not yet exhausted. October brings the strongest colour to the Plänterwald. From November to January it is best to meet around two, because daylight is gone before four. Autumn Saturdays tend to fill several weeks ahead, while Sundays and school-holiday weeks leave more choice.

How the session runs

We meet at an agreed park entrance, and the children get a hello before the parents do. The first stretch is for running, climbing or throwing leaves, with the camera following instead of directing. At some point we take the one posed group photograph, normally against a calm background of trees or an old brick wall. The rest of the seventy-five minutes is for observing — siblings negotiating, a child on someone’s shoulders, a snack break on a bench. Forty edited photographs arrive in a private gallery within 48 to 72 hours.

    Oberbaumbrücke und Landwehrkanal

    The bridge faces west along the Spree, so the evening sun sits inside it. The Landwehrkanal alongside is ten minutes of plane trees with no tourists in it, and works all year — in winter because the bare branches let the reflections in the water through.

    Tempelhofer Feld

    Three hundred hectares of runway with not one building behind it — the only place in Berlin with a real horizon. Which is exactly why it is the best backlight in the city and the worst place in a wind, and there is always a wind.

    Museumsinsel und Bodemuseum

    The prow of the Bode-Museum splits the Spree and is the one Berlin frame that needs no explaining. At seven it is yours; from ten the coach parties are standing on the Monbijou bridge you photograph it from.

    Viktoriapark und Kreuzberg

    The only hill the city has: sixty-six metres, an artificial waterfall and a view north over the roofs. Not a mountain, but the one place a Berlin session gets any height at all.

    Sowjetisches Ehrenmal und Plänterwald, Treptow

    A three-hundred-metre axis between weeping willows, built to make people look small — which is exactly why it works for two of them. The Plänterwald next to it is actual forest, ten minutes from the S-Bahn, and in October the best colour in the city.

Questions

We are expats and our family lives abroad. Can we send the gallery to them?

Yes. The gallery is private but can be shared by link, so grandparents in another country can view the photographs directly. If you want a few frames specifically for relatives, mention it on the day, and the photographer will make sure there are good portraits of each child alongside the group picture.

Does a session in a Berlin park need a permit?

Not for a private family session. The fees and registration that apply in parks run by Grün Berlin, such as Tempelhofer Feld or the Mauerpark, concern commercial productions. A family photographing its own children, with a photographer it has hired privately, does not fall into that category.

Our children speak German and English. Which language do you use?

Whichever they respond to on the day. Many families in Berlin switch between languages, and children often relax faster when the photographer uses the one they speak at nursery or school. Tell us in advance, and the introductions and games will happen in that language.
