How the session runs

Individuals come to the studio; teams of about six or more are photographed at your office. There we need a room of roughly four by three metres with one clear wall, and we bring the lighting. Setting up takes around half an hour, after which ten minutes a person is realistic, so a team of twenty takes half a day. For the environmental frame we look for a spot in the office with depth, such as a corridor or a window. Each person’s 15 to 20 retouched photographs arrive within 48 hours, in square and 4:5 crops.

    Ten hectares of brick, cobbles and multi-pane windows that have been worked in for a hundred and twenty years — cotton first, art now. The yards are open, the halls are not; anyone who wants an interior asks the tenant beforehand, and that takes a few days.

    A nineteenth-century industrial canal with brick bridges, towpaths and canoes on it. This is Leipzig’s own subject: not a historic centre but working architecture on water that nobody has tidied up for a postcard.

    Ninety-one metres of granite above a reflecting pool — the largest monument in Europe, and impossible to read the scale of until a person stands in front of it. It faces east, so the morning is when the front takes light.

    Clara-Zetkin-Park und Auwald

    The park runs into the floodplain forest with no boundary between them, and that forest runs six kilometres through the city. In spring there is wild garlic under a canopy that has not closed yet — for two weeks, the softest green any German city has.

    Leipzig has a connected system of covered arcades from its trade-fair years, and the Mädlerpassage with Auerbachs Keller is the most elaborate of them. In the rain that is an entire session location under cover, with daylight from above.

Questions

Can you photograph our team in English?

Yes. Planning, direction during the session and all correspondence can run in English, which is common with international teams in Leipzig. If your staff speak several languages, that is no obstacle; directions in front of a camera are short, and people understand a demonstration faster than an explanation.

Can colleagues who join later match the existing set?

Yes. At the first session we record the set-up — light positions, distance, focal length and background. New staff can then come to the studio individually or join the next office session, and their headshots will still sit consistently alongside everyone else on the team page.

Do you travel to offices outside the city?
