Why corporate headshots in Hamburg

Hamburg’s businesses work out of very different rooms — agencies in converted older buildings, logistics and shipping firms behind glass in HafenCity, media companies in open-plan floors. Corporate headshots in Hamburg are therefore usually taken where people work rather than in a studio. From about six people it is the cheaper option, and the office itself can serve as the environmental background. What does not help is the city’s changeable daylight pouring through a glass façade, because its colour shifts from one hour to the next. So we always bring and use our own lighting, and the twentieth portrait of the afternoon matches the first of the morning — which is the whole point of a team page.

For a team day, choose a mid-week date when most people are in the office, and send round a sign-up sheet with time slots two weeks ahead. The neutral background is independent of season. If you want window daylight visible in the environmental frames, schedule those before three in the afternoon between November and February, when it gets dark early.

How the session runs

We need a room of roughly four by three metres with one clear wall; a meeting room usually does. Setting up takes around half an hour before the first slot. After that each person spends about ten minutes in front of the camera, so a team of twenty takes half a day. Environmental frames are taken in a second area of the office, such as a corridor or a desk. Each person receives 15 to 20 retouched photographs in square and 4:5 crops within 48 hours.

    Speicherstadt und Wasserschloss

    Red brick over narrow canals, and the alleys are tight enough that direct sun only reaches in around midday. So this is not a golden-hour location but a blue-hour one: from dusk the Speicherstadt is lit and looks like the thing it holds the World Heritage listing for.

    Plaza der Elbphilharmonie

    Thirty-seven metres above the harbour, open on every side, and free to enter — you only need a timed slot booked in advance. The west side gives you the Elbe and the cranes, the east side the Speicherstadt, and the circuit takes ten minutes.

    Treppenviertel Blankenese

    Some five thousand steps between captains’ houses falling south to the Elbe — Hamburg’s only slope and its only place with afternoon light from the front. People live here, so the work is quiet and without a rig.

    Alsterwiesen und Außenalster

    An inland lake in the middle of the city with a seven-kilometre path round it and sails on it into October. The west bank takes the morning and the east bank the evening — a distinction that matters more here than elsewhere, because there is no shade to hide behind.

    Alter Elbtunnel

    Four hundred metres of framed tube twenty-four metres under the Elbe, symmetrical to the vanishing point and identical in any weather. This is the fallback when it is raining sideways outside — and often the best frame of the day.

Questions

Our office is all glass walls. Does that work?

Yes. We bring our own backdrop for the neutral frames, so glass behind it does not matter. A glass-walled meeting room can even make a good environmental background, provided what shows through is office rather than street. A few phone photos of the space beforehand are enough for us to plan it.

Can new hires be photographed later to match?

Yes. We record the lighting set-up, distances and background from the first session, so someone joining your Hamburg team next quarter gets a portrait that sits alongside the existing ones. That works for one person or for several new starters booked together.

Can the session be run in English for an international team?

Yes. Direction during the session, the scheduling and all correspondence can be in English, which suits the many Hamburg offices where the working language is not German. Mixed teams are common, and switching between both languages during the day is no problem.
