At the Völkerschlachtdenkmal, morning is the time: the monument faces east, so the front takes the light early. The canal suits late afternoon in summer, and the park is at its best in October. How the session runs

Beforehand we go over the place, the exact spot and the signal by phone. On the day the photographer arrives ten minutes early, takes a position thirty to fifty metres away and waits for the two of you to appear. The proposal is shot on a long lens, unobtrusively among other visitors. Once the answer is yes, the photographer joins you, and we have 30 minutes of couple portraits nearby. A first set reaches you the same evening, out of 35 edited photographs in total.

    Ten hectares of brick, cobbles and multi-pane windows that have been worked in for a hundred and twenty years — cotton first, art now. The yards are open, the halls are not; anyone who wants an interior asks the tenant beforehand, and that takes a few days.

    Ninety-one metres of granite above a reflecting pool — the largest monument in Europe, and impossible to read the scale of until a person stands in front of it. It faces east, so the morning is when the front takes light.

    Clara-Zetkin-Park und Auwald

    The park runs into the floodplain forest with no boundary between them, and that forest runs six kilometres through the city. In spring there is wild garlic under a canopy that has not closed yet — for two weeks, the softest green any German city has.

    Leipzig has a connected system of covered arcades from its trade-fair years, and the Mädlerpassage with Auerbachs Keller is the most elaborate of them. In the rain that is an entire session location under cover, with daylight from above.

Questions

How do I get my partner to the monument early without spoiling it?

Most people build it into a weekend trip: an early walk before breakfast, or a sightseeing stop on the way somewhere else. The monument is in the south-east of the city and easy to reach by tram, so an early visit looks like ordinary tourism rather than a plan.

What if my partner spots the photographer?

Then being spotted becomes part of the story, which is rarely as bad as it sounds. To avoid it, the photographer dresses plainly, never stands directly in your partner’s line of sight and only messages you if we agreed that in advance. The camera stays at a distance until the signal.

Is a permit needed at any of these places?

Not for a private session. The canal towpaths and Clara-Zetkin-Park are public and free, and the grounds of the Völkerschlachtdenkmal are too. Only the interior and the viewing platform of the monument charge admission, and we do not need either for the proposal.
