Only a civil ceremony at a German registry office is legally binding, and for non-residents the paperwork can take months, so many couples marry at home and hold the ceremony here. The castle courtyard needs tickets and chargeable permission for commercial photography. And the old town is crowded from ten to five, which shapes when portraits happen.

Late October to mid-November gives Heidelberg its best light and fewer coaches, though evenings get cool and dusk comes early. May, June and September are busy in town, so guest hotels need booking early. From late November the Christmas market fills the old town. Couple portraits happen in the last two hours before sunset on the Philosophenweg, across the Neckar from the castle, or at the reception venue if it lies outside town.     The view the town is known for: castle, old bridge and old town on a single line, from above and across the river. It faces south, so it is right in the afternoon and exactly wrong in the morning.

    A baroque sandstone bridge with a gate tower, occupied by groups by the minute from ten. The one hour in which it is yours is before eight — after that every frame is a frame with strangers in it.

    Schlossgarten und Altan

    The terrace on the Altan looks straight over the old town and down the valley — the view Turner painted. The garden in front of it is broad enough to step out of the flow of visitors, which the courtyard itself does not allow.

    Neckarwiese

    A kilometre of riverside meadow on the north bank with the castle on the far side. Half the student body sits here in the evening, and that is exactly what makes it the least self-conscious place in town — nobody looks when somebody is being photographed.

    Heiliggeistkirche und Marktplatz

    Red sandstone over a square tight enough that the facade throws the light back. For a church wedding it is the central address in the old town; for anything else, early Sunday is worth it, before the market stalls and the terraces take the square.

Questions

How do our guests get from the airport to Heidelberg?

Frankfurt Airport is the usual arrival point, roughly an hour away by train or car, and some guests prefer a shuttle. That is outside our role, but we build arrival times into the running order so the welcome drinks start once most guests are in town.

Can we get married at Heidelberg Castle?

That question belongs to the castle administration and the registry office, which set their own rules for ceremonies and events. For photography, the courtyard requires tickets and chargeable permission, which we apply for. We can advise on light and timing once the venue is confirmed.

Do we need to travel to Heidelberg before the wedding?

Not for the photography. The location walk-through and running order are planned over video, with photographs and maps of each spot. If you are visiting anyway, a walk together along the Philosophenweg at the planned hour is useful but optional.
