Why wedding photography in Heidelberg

A wedding photographer in Heidelberg plans a day in a town that belongs to its visitors between ten and five. That matters most for the couple portraits. The old bridge and the Hauptstraße are almost impossible to photograph at midday without strangers in the frame, and the castle courtyard needs a ticket for everyone plus chargeable permission for commercial work. Fortunately the best light falls in the evening anyway. The Philosophenweg on the north bank looks south at the castle slope and glows in the last two hours before sunset. Church weddings in the Heiliggeistkirche follow the parish’s own rules, and many receptions take place outside town, in Schwetzingen, Weinheim or Ladenburg.

Saturdays from May to September go twelve to eighteen months ahead. A late-October wedding has Heidelberg’s best light and autumn colour on the castle slope, at the cost of an earlier dusk. In high summer the Neckar valley is sultry, so portraits move to late evening. From late November the Christmas market fills the old town for about six weeks.

How the session runs

The day opens with getting ready and then runs to the schedule we fixed together on the planning call. If the ceremony is in the old town, we photograph arrivals and congratulations outside the church or venue. For portraits we slip away from the reception in the early evening for about forty minutes: across the old bridge, up the Schlangenweg and out onto the view of castle and town. If the reception is further out, we plan the drive or use the venue’s own grounds. A preview follows within 48 hours, and the full 500 photographs within three weeks.

    Philosophenweg

    The view the town is known for: castle, old bridge and old town on a single line, from above and across the river. It faces south, so it is right in the afternoon and exactly wrong in the morning.

    Alte Brücke

    A baroque sandstone bridge with a gate tower, occupied by groups by the minute from ten. The one hour in which it is yours is before eight — after that every frame is a frame with strangers in it.

    Schlossgarten und Altan

    The terrace on the Altan looks straight over the old town and down the valley — the view Turner painted. The garden in front of it is broad enough to step out of the flow of visitors, which the courtyard itself does not allow.

    Neckarwiese

    A kilometre of riverside meadow on the north bank with the castle on the far side. Half the student body sits here in the evening, and that is exactly what makes it the least self-conscious place in town — nobody looks when somebody is being photographed.

    Heiliggeistkirche und Marktplatz

    Red sandstone over a square tight enough that the facade throws the light back. For a church wedding it is the central address in the old town; for anything else, early Sunday is worth it, before the market stalls and the terraces take the square.

Questions

Can our portraits be taken at Heidelberg Castle?

Yes, with tickets for everyone involved and chargeable permission from the state palaces administration, which we apply for and invoice separately. For the classic view of the castle itself, though, the Philosophenweg is better, and it needs no permit at all.

Can a bride in a long dress manage the Philosophenweg climb?

Yes, with a little patience. The Schlangenweg is steep and stepped, so we allow twenty minutes and a pause at the top. Comfortable shoes for the climb, with the wedding shoes in a bag, work well. Alternatively we drive as close as the roads allow.

Do you photograph ceremonies in the Heiliggeistkirche?

Yes, within the rules the parish sets. We confirm them with the parish office before the wedding: whether movement inside the church is possible, where we may stand and which moments are open to photography. We never use flash in the church.
