A family photographer in Munich should choose the location by where you live, because crossing the city with small children spends the patience you need later. Most neighbourhoods have green space close by: the Englischer Garten for Schwabing and Lehel, the Hirschgarten and the Nymphenburg park to the west, the Isar meadows for Sendling and Thalkirchen. The river has an advantage children grasp at once — stones, water and room to run — so frames with movement in them come almost by themselves. For expat families, a session is often timed to a visit from grandparents, and the location can be chosen for a relaxed walk rather than a long outing.

Book after the afternoon nap, and in summer towards evening once the heat eases. October brings colour to the parks, and the Oktoberfest only matters if your spot is near the Theresienwiese. The Isar is crowded on high-summer weekends, while a weekday after nursery tends to be calmer. Spring and autumn Saturdays go a few weeks ahead, so enquire early if the weekend is your only option.

We meet somewhere quick for you to reach and give the children a few minutes to settle. The Hirschgarten has open lawns and old trees for shade; at the Isar we head onto the gravel, where throwing stones is allowed and nobody has to stand still. The one posed group photograph comes early, while everyone is still tidy. After that the photographer stays at a distance and captures what happens. Bring a change of clothes for the little ones. Forty edited photographs follow in a private gallery within 48 to 72 hours.

    Olympiaberg

    A rubble hill from the war, sixty metres above the plain, and the only point from which the city and the Alpine chain fall into one frame. On a clear October evening half of Munich is up there; on the others you have it to yourself.

    Eisbach und Monopteros, Englischer Garten

    The Eisbach wave is the one Munich subject that moves, and it runs around the clock. The Monopteros two hundred metres on gives the view south across the meadow to the towers of the old town — empty in the morning, a picnic ground from eleven.

    Schloss Nymphenburg

    The canal axis in front of the palace is five hundred metres of symmetry and nearly photographs itself. The park behind is laid out in the English manner and far less walked — for a wedding report it is the actual destination, not the facade.

    Isarkiesbänke bei der Reichenbachbrücke

    Turquoise meltwater, white gravel and pines, five minutes from the centre. In high summer it is busy, but the banks are long enough that two hundred metres upstream you are alone.

    Viktualienmarkt und Asamkirche

    The market gives colour and movement; the Asamkirche two hundred metres on gives the opposite — a baroque interior eight metres wide in which three people are already a crowd. Together they make a session that does not look like a postcard.

Questions

Our parents are visiting from abroad. Can they join?

Of course. We take the full group photograph at the start, then a few combinations with grandparents, and keep walking to a minimum so nobody tires. Tell us about any mobility needs in the enquiry, and we will pick a flat, shaded park rather than the gravel banks.

Is the Isar safe for toddlers?

The shallow gravel banks work well as long as an adult stays within reach. The current can be strong depending on the water level, so we stay at the edge and do not go in. If the river is high after rain, we switch to a meadow or park instead.

Can the dog come too?

Yes. Dogs are easy in the Englischer Garten and along the Isar, and they often calm children down. Some parts of the parks require a lead, so bring one, and ideally a second adult who can hold the dog while we take the group photograph.
