Why family session in Hamburg

Long northern evenings are a gift for couples and a complication for families. In June the prettiest light in Hamburg arrives after eight, which is bedtime for many small children, so a family photographer in Hamburg plans around naps and dinner rather than around sunset. That shifts the choice of place towards trees and open shade, where the light at four in the afternoon is still kind, and away from the exposed waterfront at midday. The package includes one outdoor location chosen for where you live, and a city this size nearly always has a good one close by — the Stadtpark in the north, the Jenischpark and the Elbe beach in the west, Planten un Blomen in the middle.

In summer, a morning or a late afternoon under trees, after the midday nap, works best. September and October are the strongest months: clear light, and an evening hour that still comes before bedtime. In winter the usable window shrinks to roughly eleven until three. For a weekend in May or September, ask a few weeks ahead.

How the session runs

We meet somewhere close to home so the journey does not tire anyone out before we start. The one posed group photograph comes first, while everyone is still tidy and patient. After that the children play, run and hunt for stones by the water, and the camera follows. On the beach at Övelgönne passing container ships become part of the background; in the Stadtpark it is the long meadows. After 75 minutes we stop, and 40 edited photographs arrive in your gallery within 48 to 72 hours.

    Speicherstadt und Wasserschloss

    Red brick over narrow canals, and the alleys are tight enough that direct sun only reaches in around midday. So this is not a golden-hour location but a blue-hour one: from dusk the Speicherstadt is lit and looks like the thing it holds the World Heritage listing for.

    Plaza der Elbphilharmonie

    Thirty-seven metres above the harbour, open on every side, and free to enter — you only need a timed slot booked in advance. The west side gives you the Elbe and the cranes, the east side the Speicherstadt, and the circuit takes ten minutes.

    Treppenviertel Blankenese

    Some five thousand steps between captains’ houses falling south to the Elbe — Hamburg’s only slope and its only place with afternoon light from the front. People live here, so the work is quiet and without a rig.

    Alsterwiesen und Außenalster

    An inland lake in the middle of the city with a seven-kilometre path round it and sails on it into October. The west bank takes the morning and the east bank the evening — a distinction that matters more here than elsewhere, because there is no shade to hide behind.

    Alter Elbtunnel

    Four hundred metres of framed tube twenty-four metres under the Elbe, symmetrical to the vanishing point and identical in any weather. This is the fallback when it is raining sideways outside — and often the best frame of the day.

Questions

Which Hamburg location suits toddlers?

Somewhere with room and no traffic nearby: the Stadtpark, the Jenischpark or Planten un Blomen. The Elbe beach is popular with children, but the river is tidal here and at high water the beach narrows and feet get wet. We choose by your district and the children’s ages.

Can we do this in a Hamburg winter?

Yes, around midday and in warm clothes. Between eleven and three the light is usable, and a bright winter day by the Alster looks better in photographs than it feels. For continuous rain or a storm warning we move the date at no charge.

We are expats living outside the centre. Do you come to us?

Yes. The package is built around a location near where you live, and our area includes Ahrensburg, Harburg and Lüneburg as well as western districts such as Altona and Blankenese. There is no need to travel into the centre for the session.
