Why couple session in Heidelberg

A couple photoshoot in Heidelberg rarely fails for lack of scenery and often fails on timing. Between ten and five the old town is full of day visitors, the old bridge is claimed by one tour group after another, and nearly every frame includes strangers. Geography adds a second constraint. The castle sits on the south slope and the Philosophenweg faces it from across the river, so in the morning the sun is behind the castle and gives you silhouettes in haze, while in the afternoon it lights the red sandstone head-on. That leaves two sensible versions of the session, an early one at the bridge and a late one on the north bank, and the choice depends on your plans.

The bridge is yours before eight in the morning; the Philosophenweg is right in the last two hours before sunset. The strongest period is late October to mid-November, when the slope behind the castle turns and the coaches thin out. May and June are green but busy. In high summer the valley is still and humid, so an evening on the Neckarwiese works better than a climb.

How the session runs

The evening version starts at the old bridge, where we photograph the gate tower in warm light, then climbs the Schlangenweg to the Philosophenweg. The climb takes about twenty minutes and is steep, so wear comfortable shoes. At the top the castle, bridge and old town line up in one view. The morning version begins on the empty bridge and follows the riverbank to the Neckarwiese. Both spots are within walking distance and need no permit. Forty edited photographs arrive within 48 to 72 hours.

    Philosophenweg

    The view the town is known for: castle, old bridge and old town on a single line, from above and across the river. It faces south, so it is right in the afternoon and exactly wrong in the morning.

    Alte Brücke

    A baroque sandstone bridge with a gate tower, occupied by groups by the minute from ten. The one hour in which it is yours is before eight — after that every frame is a frame with strangers in it.

    Schlossgarten und Altan

    The terrace on the Altan looks straight over the old town and down the valley — the view Turner painted. The garden in front of it is broad enough to step out of the flow of visitors, which the courtyard itself does not allow.

    Neckarwiese

    A kilometre of riverside meadow on the north bank with the castle on the far side. Half the student body sits here in the evening, and that is exactly what makes it the least self-conscious place in town — nobody looks when somebody is being photographed.

    Heiliggeistkirche und Marktplatz

    Red sandstone over a square tight enough that the facade throws the light back. For a church wedding it is the central address in the old town; for anything else, early Sunday is worth it, before the market stalls and the terraces take the square.

Questions

We are staying in the old town. Where do we meet?

Usually at the old town end of the old bridge, which is a short walk from most hotels in the centre. For an early session we send a pin the evening before. If you are staying on the north bank or in Neuenheim, we can start from there and reverse the route.

Can we be photographed in the castle courtyard?

It is possible but involved. Everyone needs a ticket for the courtyard, and commercial photography requires chargeable permission from the state palaces administration. For a ninety-minute session it rarely pays off, especially since the view of the castle from the Philosophenweg is stronger than any view from inside it.

Is the climb to the Philosophenweg hard?

Short but steep: the Schlangenweg is a mix of steps and ramps and takes around twenty minutes. We pause at the top before shooting. If climbing is not for you, the riverbank and the Neckarwiese both keep the castle in view without any ascent.
