    Five hundred metres of stepped seating at the water’s edge, built as a grandstand for exactly this view. In the afternoon the sun is behind you and lights the cathedral and old town from the front; in the morning the same thing is a silhouette.

    The busiest railway bridge in Germany, with the footway running right alongside it. The padlocks on the railing are the famous subject and the passing trains are the better one — both need you to stand still, because a live line runs a metre to the left.

    Nineteenth-century facades, plane trees and cafés around the Brüsseler Platz, far enough from the cathedral that nobody asks where you are. This is the address for lifestyle and personal-branding work where the city should be a backdrop rather than the lead.

Questions

Our children speak more German than English. Does that matter?

Not at all. The session is run in whichever language the children answer to, and plenty of families switch between the two mid-sentence. Children respond to games and to being left alone for a moment far more than to instructions, so language rarely decides anything.

Can we do the session near our flat instead of the Rheinpark?

Yes, and it often tells a better story. Your street, the playground you use or the walk to nursery says more about life in Cologne than a park your family might never visit again. We just check beforehand that there is some shade or greenery close by in case the weather turns warm.

We have grandparents visiting. Can they join?
