Why wedding photography in Stuttgart

Working as a wedding photographer in Stuttgart starts with a map rather than a calendar. The city centre lies deep in a basin, and on the Schlossplatz the sun drops behind the slopes twenty to forty minutes before official sunset. Plan the portraits down there and the best light has gone before the main course. Up on the rim it is a different story: the Grabkapelle, the Karlshöhe and the vineyards above the Neckar keep the sun to the very end. Add celebrations held at wineries, country estates or in Ludwigsburg and Esslingen, and the planning call becomes the place to decide where the portraits happen and how long it takes to get there. That one decision shapes the rest of the day.

September and October are the most sought-after months: the vineyards change colour, the air is clearer and the summer heat has gone. Bear in mind that wineries are busy with their own harvest at that time. In July and August the basin gets hot, so portraits belong in the evening rather than the middle of the day. For a Saturday in season, twelve to eighteen months' notice is realistic.

How the session runs

Ten hours run from getting ready through the ceremony and reception into the evening. For portraits we head uphill, depending on the venue: from a winery straight onto the paths between the vines, or from the city centre to the Karlshöhe or the Stäffele stairways. We stay on the paths, because the vine rows themselves are private. Then come speeches, cake and dancing. A preview arrives within 48 hours, and the gallery of 500 edited photographs, each also in black and white, within three weeks.

    Grabkapelle auf dem Württemberg

    A neoclassical rotunda at four hundred metres, rows of vines all round it and the whole Neckar valley below. The one place around Stuttgart where architecture, vineyard and a view fall into a single frame — and it is open to the west, so you keep the sun to the end.

    Stäffele am Eugensplatz

    The best known of Stuttgart’s eight hundred flights, looking out over the roofs and down into the bowl. It is steep enough that every step gives a different camera height and narrow enough that a session runs here without an audience.

    Schlossplatz und Neues Schloss

    The city’s grand square, with its column, its fountains and the palace facade behind. It is wide and open, so merciless at midday and good in the morning — and from ten it is the thoroughfare for half the centre.

    Killesbergturm und Höhenpark

    A forty-metre cable-net tower that visibly moves as you climb it, in a park of lawns and flower terraces. For families it is the most practical address in the city: space, shade, somewhere for children to be, and a subject within walking distance.

    Weinberge Rotenberg und Uhlbach

    Steep slopes above the Neckar, twelve minutes from the main station on the S-Bahn. The tracks between the parcels are public; the rows themselves are not — which is not a formality but the difference between a welcome visitor and damage to someone’s vines.

Can we have portraits at the Grabkapelle?

The grounds on the Württemberg hill are open to the public, with vineyards and the Neckar valley below and sun until it sets. The interior charges admission, and commercial photography inside needs an arrangement with the palace administration, so we normally plan for the outside.

How do you handle a hot summer wedding?

Anything outdoors moves into shade or into the evening. Group photographs happen under trees rather than on open squares, and couple portraits go into the last hour before sunset up on the rim. We build water and a short break for the two of you into the running order.

Do you work in English on the day?

Yes, with you and your guests, and in German with the venue, the registrar or the winery where needed. For group photographs with a mixed family we call names in both languages, which saves time and confusion, especially when relatives do not share a language.
