Why wedding photography in Berlin

Working as a wedding photographer in Berlin means planning the day in distances before anything else. Getting ready in Prenzlauer Berg, a civil ceremony in Charlottenburg and a reception in a converted hall by the Spree can easily be three different places, each half an hour from the next. Many Berlin weddings also have guests arriving from several countries who need to find their way between those stops. Ten hours of coverage is comfortable when the journeys are written into the running order and tight when they are not. That is why the planning call includes a location walk-through and an honest timetable. If you want portraits along the Landwehrkanal or in the Tiergarten, they get a fixed slot rather than whatever is left between drinks and dinner.

Saturdays from May to September are usually booked twelve to eighteen months in advance. Fridays, and weddings in April or October, can often be arranged six months out. In high summer it is worth moving the couple portraits into the evening, because the sun sets after nine. A December wedding needs its portraits before half past three, ideally ahead of the meal.

How the session runs

Coverage starts with getting ready, usually in a flat or a hotel room. Then come the ceremony, the congratulations and the drinks reception, where group photographs follow a list we have agreed beforehand. For portraits we step out to somewhere close — from a venue in Kreuzberg, often the canal. After that we cover the speeches, dinner, cake and first dance. The photographer travels between locations independently and arrives before you do. A preview set follows within 48 hours, and the full gallery of 500 edited photographs, each also in black and white, within three weeks.

    Oberbaumbrücke und Landwehrkanal

    The bridge faces west along the Spree, so the evening sun sits inside it. The Landwehrkanal alongside is ten minutes of plane trees with no tourists in it, and works all year — in winter because the bare branches let the reflections in the water through.

    Tempelhofer Feld

    Three hundred hectares of runway with not one building behind it — the only place in Berlin with a real horizon. Which is exactly why it is the best backlight in the city and the worst place in a wind, and there is always a wind.

    Museumsinsel und Bodemuseum

    The prow of the Bode-Museum splits the Spree and is the one Berlin frame that needs no explaining. At seven it is yours; from ten the coach parties are standing on the Monbijou bridge you photograph it from.

    Viktoriapark und Kreuzberg

    The only hill the city has: sixty-six metres, an artificial waterfall and a view north over the roofs. Not a mountain, but the one place a Berlin session gets any height at all.

    Sowjetisches Ehrenmal und Plänterwald, Treptow

    A three-hundred-metre axis between weeping willows, built to make people look small — which is exactly why it works for two of them. The Plänterwald next to it is actual forest, ten minutes from the S-Bahn, and in October the best colour in the city.

Questions

We live abroad and want to marry in Berlin. What should we sort out first?

The legal part. A civil ceremony at a German registry office is what makes a marriage legally binding, and non-residents need documents that can take months to gather. Many international couples marry at home and hold a celebration in Berlin instead. Once that is settled, the photography plan follows the shape of the day.

Our venue is an old industrial building. Is the light a problem?

Berlin has many venues in former factories and power stations, often with tall windows but very little light after dark. It is manageable with bounced flash, and warm string lights or candles help the atmosphere in the photographs. We check the space during the walk-through at the time your evening will actually take place.

Can we add portraits at Schloss Sanssouci in Potsdam?

Potsdam is within reach, but the palaces and gardens there are managed by a foundation with its own rules on photography, which we check before your date. The drive from central Berlin also takes about an hour each way at busy times, so it works best as a separate block in the timetable.
