Why maternity session in Stuttgart

A maternity photoshoot in Stuttgart often falls in the warm months, and in the basin that is more than a detail. Nobody in week 32 wants to stand on an open square in July sun or climb one of the city's steep stairways. So this session is planned differently from a couple shoot. Outdoors, the priorities are shade and level ground: the lawns of Killesberg park, or a vineyard path you can reach by car. The alternative is your own home, by a window with soft daylight, no travel and the sofa within reach. For families who have moved to the region for work and have no favourite park yet, the home option is often the simplest. Both work equally well.

The right window is between weeks 28 and 34, so it is best to book during the second trimester. In summer we start outdoors in the early evening, once the heat eases, and stay on higher ground where the light lasts longer. September and October are more comfortable, with the vineyards changing colour. In winter a session at home is often better, in late morning when window light is at its brightest.

How the session runs

Outdoors, we meet somewhere with parking or a stop nearby and keep to level paths. We photograph standing, walking and sitting on the grass, with breaks whenever you need them. Your partner and older children are welcome, usually in the second half. At home, we find the window with the softest light and clear a corner together. After seventy-five minutes we are done, and your 30 edited photographs follow in a private gallery within 48 to 72 hours.

Where we photograph in Stuttgart

  1. 01

    Grabkapelle auf dem Württemberg

A neoclassical rotunda at four hundred metres, rows of vines all round it and the whole Neckar valley below. The one place around Stuttgart where architecture, vineyard and a view fall into a single frame — and it is open to the west, so you keep the sun to the end.

    Best time:
    Sunset
    Permit:
Grounds free. Interior: admission, and commercial photography by arrangement with the palace administration
  2. 02

    Stäffele am Eugensplatz

The best known of Stuttgart’s eight hundred flights, looking out over the roofs and down into the bowl. It is steep enough that every step gives a different camera height and narrow enough that a session runs here without an audience.

    Best time:
    Late afternoon, October
    Permit:
    Free — public stairs
  3. 03

    Schlossplatz und Neues Schloss

The city’s grand square, with its column, its fountains and the palace facade behind. It is wide and open, so merciless at midday and good in the morning — and from ten it is the thoroughfare for half the centre.

    Best time:
    Before nine
    Permit:
    Free — public square
  4. 04

    Killesbergturm und Höhenpark

A forty-metre cable-net tower that visibly moves as you climb it, in a park of lawns and flower terraces. For families it is the most practical address in the city: space, shade, somewhere for children to be, and a subject within walking distance.

    Best time:
    Late morning or late afternoon
    Permit:
Free — public park and tower
  5. 05

    Weinberge Rotenberg und Uhlbach

Steep slopes above the Neckar, twelve minutes from the main station on the S-Bahn. The tracks between the parcels are public; the rows themselves are not — which is not a formality but the difference between a welcome visitor and damage to someone’s vines.

    Best time:
    Harvest, September and October
    Permit:
Paths free. The vine rows are private property — do not walk into them

Questions

Will it be too hot outdoors in summer?

At midday in the basin, yes, so on hot days we photograph from early evening onwards and in shaded spots. Bring water and choose light, airy clothing. If it is very hot on the day, we can switch to your home at short notice, as long as that option was agreed beforehand.

What should I wear?

Plain, flowing dresses or a close-fitting top that shows the shape of the bump. Earth tones suit the vineyards in autumn, while lighter colours work well by a window indoors. Bring a second option, and something for your partner that complements rather than matches.

Our flat is small. Does an indoor session still work?

Usually, yes. What we need is one window with good daylight and a little clear space in front of it. Tidy only the area in the frame and leave the rest; nobody sees it. A plain wall, a bed with light linen or a simple chair is enough for a calm set of pictures.
