Why civil ceremony in Stuttgart

A civil ceremony in Stuttgart is brief, but the hours around it deserve planning. Inside the ceremony room, the registry office decides where photography may happen, which usually means one position and no flash. Outside, the city itself takes over. Buildings in the centre stand close together, squares are harshly lit at midday, and in the evening the sun sets early behind the rim of the basin. So for the forty-five minutes of couple portraits afterwards we pick a place that suits the time of day: the shade of the Schlossgarten, a hillside stairway in the afternoon or, for ceremonies in Esslingen or Ludwigsburg, somewhere close to the ceremony there. That is how the day ends up with more than a photograph on the steps.

Friday slots are popular, so contact us as soon as the registry office has confirmed your appointment. A morning ceremony gives calmer photographs around the Schlossplatz, before it becomes a busy thoroughfare at about ten. On summer afternoons the basin gets hot, and a short walk into shade helps. In autumn, portraits can include the colour of the vineyards if the ceremony is not too far from them.

How the session runs

We arrive before your guests to photograph arrivals, witnesses and the first embraces. In the ceremony room we follow the registry office's rules and capture the rings and the signing. Then we gather everyone for a group photograph, in a spot with a calm background and preferably in shade. The forty-five minutes of couple portraits happen within walking distance or after a short drive, depending on the location. After three hours we are finished, and the 150 edited photographs arrive within a week.

    Grabkapelle auf dem Württemberg

    A neoclassical rotunda at four hundred metres, rows of vines all round it and the whole Neckar valley below. The one place around Stuttgart where architecture, vineyard and a view fall into a single frame — and it is open to the west, so you keep the sun to the end.

    Stäffele am Eugensplatz

    The best known of Stuttgart’s eight hundred flights, looking out over the roofs and down into the bowl. It is steep enough that every step gives a different camera height and narrow enough that a session runs here without an audience.

    Schlossplatz und Neues Schloss

    The city’s grand square, with its column, its fountains and the palace facade behind. It is wide and open, so merciless at midday and good in the morning — and from ten it is the thoroughfare for half the centre.

    Killesbergturm und Höhenpark

    A forty-metre cable-net tower that visibly moves as you climb it, in a park of lawns and flower terraces. For families it is the most practical address in the city: space, shade, somewhere for children to be, and a subject within walking distance.

    Weinberge Rotenberg und Uhlbach

    Steep slopes above the Neckar, twelve minutes from the main station on the S-Bahn. The tracks between the parcels are public; the rows themselves are not — which is not a formality but the difference between a welcome visitor and damage to someone’s vines.

Questions

We do not speak German well. Will that affect the ceremony?

The registry office sets its own requirements for couples who do not speak German, which can include bringing an interpreter, so ask them early. We work with you in English throughout and speak German with the staff where needed, for example to confirm where we may stand.

Where do we take the group photograph on a hot day?

Under trees or in the shade of a building, never on an open square in full sun. Nobody squints, older guests are not left standing in the heat, and the light on faces is softer. We choose the spot beforehand and arrange the group quickly.

Can our portraits be in the vineyards?

Yes, if time allows. Vineyards such as those at Rotenberg or Uhlbach are a short drive from the centre, and the drive counts towards the forty-five minutes. After a ceremony in the city centre, the Stäffele stairways are a closer alternative with views across the rooftops.
