A couple photoshoot in Stuttgart offers something rare for a large German city: working vineyards inside the city limits, linked to the streets below by steep public stairways known as Stäffele. From the top you look out across rooftops into the basin, perhaps with a tram passing beneath. That same view is the reason planning matters here. Down in the valley the golden hour ends early, because the slope blocks the sun; up on the rim the light lasts to the end. Our session covers two locations on foot, which suits the city well. We start on a stairway such as the one at Eugensplatz, where every step gives a different angle, and climb higher as the light turns warm.

September and October are the best months, when the vines turn colour and the air is clear. Summer in the basin is often hot, so we meet late and stay on higher ground. The key is to start about an hour before official sunset, and not down in the centre. In winter, keep an eye on the forecast: when fog settles in the basin, the slopes above it are often in sunshine.

How the session runs

We meet at Eugensplatz and spend the first minutes on the stairways getting comfortable: walking, pausing, starting again a few steps higher. The steps are narrow enough that hardly anyone watches. Then we climb further, where the city opens up and the light stays longer. If you want vines in the frame, we meet in Uhlbach or at Rotenberg instead and keep to the paths between the parcels. After ninety minutes we are done, and your 40 edited photographs follow within 48 to 72 hours.

    Grabkapelle auf dem Württemberg

    A neoclassical rotunda at four hundred metres, rows of vines all round it and the whole Neckar valley below. The one place around Stuttgart where architecture, vineyard and a view fall into a single frame — and it is open to the west, so you keep the sun to the end.

    The best known of Stuttgart’s eight hundred flights, looking out over the roofs and down into the bowl. It is steep enough that every step gives a different camera height and narrow enough that a session runs here without an audience.

    Schlossplatz und Neues Schloss

    The city’s grand square, with its column, its fountains and the palace facade behind. It is wide and open, so merciless at midday and good in the morning — and from ten it is the thoroughfare for half the centre.

    Killesbergturm und Höhenpark

    A forty-metre cable-net tower that visibly moves as you climb it, in a park of lawns and flower terraces. For families it is the most practical address in the city: space, shade, somewhere for children to be, and a subject within walking distance.

    Weinberge Rotenberg und Uhlbach

    Steep slopes above the Neckar, twelve minutes from the main station on the S-Bahn. The tracks between the parcels are public; the rows themselves are not — which is not a formality but the difference between a welcome visitor and damage to someone’s vines.

Questions

How steep are the Stäffele?

Steep but short. We take them slowly and stop often, since that is where many of the photographs are taken anyway. Comfortable shoes matter; if you want heels, carry them in a bag and put them on for a few frames. If climbing is difficult for either of you, we choose a location with less height to gain.

Can we get to the vineyards without a car?

Yes. Uhlbach and Rotenberg can be reached by public transport from the city centre, followed by a walk uphill. We send directions with the booking confirmation. Allow time for the climb so that you arrive relaxed rather than out of breath when the session begins.

Is autumn busy in the vineyards?

It is harvest time, so growers are out working and vehicles may use the tracks. We give way, keep to the edges and never block access. In return the slopes are at their most colourful, and weekday evenings are usually quiet enough for relaxed portraits.
