The weather on the heights adds uncertainty, since a fixed Saturday in July can bring a thunderstorm as easily as fog. What the region rewards is flexibility. An hour before sunset the light runs sideways across meadows and firs, and a portrait at the forest edge needs no transfer when the venue already stands in open country.

May and June bring fresh green and long evenings, while September and early October often bring steadier weather and warmer light. In high summer afternoon thunderstorms are common, so an outdoor ceremony sits better in late morning or early evening. A winter date is possible, but roads to higher venues can close. Popular country hotels and farms are booked well ahead for season Saturdays, so secure the venue and photographer twelve to eighteen months out.

How the session runs

After the planning call we visit the venue and decide where the couple portraits will happen, ideally within walking distance: the forest edge, a meadow or a stream. The day begins with getting ready, usually in the same building as the party. After the ceremony and reception come the family groups, while everyone is still fresh, and the couple portraits just before sunset, when light slants between the trunks. If it rains we move into the barn, the parlour or a conservatory; in fog we simply keep going. Ten hours, 500 edited photographs, a preview within 48 hours and the gallery within three weeks.

    Hornisgrinde und Mummelsee

    At eleven hundred metres the highest point of the northern Black Forest, with a raised bog on top and the Mummelsee a little over a hundred metres below. In an inversion you stand above the fog here; on an ordinary day it is a bare ridge with a long view into the Rhine plain.

    Triberger Wasserfälle

    A hundred and sixty-three metres of drop over seven stages, with boardwalks alongside. Direct sun is the enemy here — the contrast between water and shade goes past what is usable. An overcast day is the right condition, and in May the fall carries the most water.

    Schluchsee und Feldberg

    The largest lake in the Black Forest at nine hundred metres, with the Feldberg behind it. Eighteen kilometres of shore are walkable, so even in August there is a bay with nobody in it — and in winter there is reliable snow here.

    Gutach und die Schwarzwaldhöfe

    The deep hipped roofs the region is known for stand singly in meadow valleys rather than in villages. From the public tracks you get them with the slope and the wood behind; you go onto a farm itself only when somebody has agreed to it.

    Ravennaschlucht und Höllental

    A tight gorge with a forty-metre railway viaduct across it, under which a Christmas market stands in December. The rest of the year it is a forest track along a stream, with the light coming down through the firs.

Where should our guests stay?

Ideally at the venue or in the same village. Within one area, drives take twenty to forty minutes, and taxis are hard to find in the countryside late at night. If you need more beds than a village can offer, put guests up in Freiburg or Baden-Baden and run a shuttle at fixed times.

Do you cover weddings near Freiburg or Baden-Baden?

Yes. Freiburg, Baden-Baden, Triberg, Titisee-Neustadt, Gengenbach and Schiltach are within our area at no travel surcharge. For more remote farms or hotels, travel is set out in the quote. Send the venue address with your enquiry and we will also tell you which portrait spots lie close by.

Is a winter wedding in the Black Forest a good idea?

For a small celebration, it can be. From December to March there is reliable snow at altitude, and photographs in a snow-covered forest look like nowhere else. In exchange it gets dark early, some roads may close and guests need winter tyres. We then move the couple portraits to the middle of the day.
