Why wedding photography in Hamburg

Hamburg is the northernmost city we work in, and a wedding here is planned around that before anything else. For a wedding photographer in Hamburg the question is not only where the portraits happen but when there is light for them: close to ten in the evening in late June, before four in December. The weather adds its own rhythm. Whole days of rain are rare; showers that pass within the hour are not. So the planning call fixes a portrait slot, a covered fallback a few minutes away and enough slack to wait out a cloud. What the city gives back is density — brick warehouses, water and cranes within a short walk of one another, and for couples celebrating near the Elbe, a backdrop that barely needs a detour.

Between May and August the evenings are long enough to put the portraits after dinner, when the light is low over the river. September and October are the clearest months but also the windiest, which matters for veils on the waterfront. A winter wedding works if the day is turned around: portraits straight after the ceremony and finished by three, blue hour in the Speicherstadt afterwards. Summer Saturdays go twelve to eighteen months ahead.

How the session runs

The location walk-through is mostly about distances. A ceremony in one district, portraits in a second and a party in a third can cost the afternoon in Saturday traffic, so the portraits go wherever the day already is — the riverside at Blankenese, the Speicherstadt bridges or the Alster shore. A covered alternative is agreed in advance. Coverage runs for ten hours, every frame also comes in black and white, a preview set arrives within 48 hours and the full gallery of 500 edited photographs within three weeks.

Where we photograph in Hamburg

    Speicherstadt und Wasserschloss

    Red brick over narrow canals, and the alleys are tight enough that direct sun only reaches in around midday. So this is not a golden-hour location but a blue-hour one: from dusk the Speicherstadt is lit and looks like the thing it holds the World Heritage listing for.

    Plaza der Elbphilharmonie

    Thirty-seven metres above the harbour, open on every side, and free to enter — you only need a timed slot booked in advance. The west side gives you the Elbe and the cranes, the east side the Speicherstadt, and the circuit takes ten minutes.

    Treppenviertel Blankenese

    Some five thousand steps between captains’ houses falling south to the Elbe — Hamburg’s only slope and its only place with afternoon light from the front. People live here, so the work is quiet and without a rig.

    Alsterwiesen und Außenalster

    An inland lake in the middle of the city with a seven-kilometre path round it and sails on it into October. The west bank takes the morning and the east bank the evening — a distinction that matters more here than elsewhere, because there is no shade to hide behind.

    Alter Elbtunnel

    Four hundred metres of framed tube twenty-four metres under the Elbe, symmetrical to the vanishing point and identical in any weather. This is the fallback when it is raining sideways outside — and often the best frame of the day.

Questions

Can we do portraits on the Elbphilharmonie Plaza?

Yes. Everyone going up needs a free timed ticket. Working with a camera alone, without lighting or an assistant, is straightforward; anything more needs clearing with the operator, which we do beforehand. On summer weekends the plaza is busy, so allow twenty minutes rather than ten.

Does a December wedding in Hamburg make sense?

It can. Daylight is gone by half past three, so the ceremony and portraits belong in late morning or around midday. In exchange the afternoon offers something summer cannot: the Speicherstadt lit up at blue hour from about quarter past four, and far fewer people in it than in the high season.

Do you cover weddings outside the city, in Lüneburg for example?

Yes. Lüneburg and Ahrensburg are part of the area we cover from Hamburg, as are Altona, Harburg and Blankenese. For a celebration outside the city the only real point is to put honest driving times into the running order, so the journey does not come out of the portrait slot. We settle that on the planning call.
