Why humanist ceremony in Black Forest

Planning a humanist ceremony in the Black Forest begins with an unromantic question: who owns the meadow? The ceremony carries no legal weight in Germany, because the marriage itself happens at the Standesamt before or after, and that is precisely why couples feel free to hold it wherever they like, in a clearing, by a lake or before a farmhouse with a deep roof. Here that freedom has limits. Many of the finest open spaces lie in nature reserves where no structures may be put up, and the farms are working businesses whose owners must agree. For a photographer, the terrain then decides the rest. In narrow valleys the sun slips behind the slope early, while open ridges hold the light longer but catch the wind, so the walk-through checks sun and shade for your actual hour.

An outdoor ceremony is realistic from May to early October, with fresh green in May and warmer light by September. The hour depends on the valley. On an open height, four to six suits a summer ceremony; in a narrow valley, bring it forward an hour before the hillside casts its shadow. Hot summer afternoons can build thunderstorms over the hills, so keep a tent or a barn in reserve. Couples marrying from abroad should fix the legal marriage first, since the registry paperwork sets the date.

How the session runs

A few weeks beforehand we walk the site with you, either at the hour of the ceremony or with the sun position calculated for that date. On the day we begin with the set-up: chairs, the arch, details and the celebrant’s run-through. The ceremony is photographed from two positions, front and to the side for faces, and behind for the view over the guests into the valley. Congratulations, a group photograph on open ground and portraits at the forest edge or the shore come next, within walking distance. The reception and the first hour of the party follow, often at an inn. Your 350 edited photographs arrive within two weeks.

    Hornisgrinde und Mummelsee

    At eleven hundred metres the highest point of the northern Black Forest, with a raised bog on top and the Mummelsee a little over a hundred metres below. In an inversion you stand above the fog here; on an ordinary day it is a bare ridge with a long view into the Rhine plain.

    Triberger Wasserfälle

    A hundred and sixty-three metres of drop over seven stages, with boardwalks alongside. Direct sun is the enemy here — the contrast between water and shade goes past what is usable. An overcast day is the right condition, and in May the fall carries the most water.

    Schluchsee und Feldberg

    The largest lake in the Black Forest at nine hundred metres, with the Feldberg behind it. Eighteen kilometres of shore are walkable, so even in August there is a bay with nobody in it — and in winter there is reliable snow here.

    Gutach und die Schwarzwaldhöfe

    The deep hipped roofs the region is known for stand singly in meadow valleys rather than in villages. From the public tracks you get them with the slope and the wood behind; you go onto a farm itself only when somebody has agreed to it.

    Ravennaschlucht und Höllental

    A tight gorge with a forty-metre railway viaduct across it, under which a Christmas market stands in December. The rest of the year it is a forest track along a stream, with the light coming down through the firs.

Questions

Do we need permission to hold a ceremony in the forest?

That depends on who owns the land. It may be the municipality, the state forestry service or a private owner, and in nature reserves structures are generally not allowed at all. Ask early, before invitations go out. We cannot grant permission ourselves, but on the walk-through we can tell you what will work in photographs.

Can the humanist ceremony be our legal wedding?

No. In Germany only a civil marriage at a Standesamt is legally binding. Many couples marry at the registry office the same morning or at home before travelling, and hold the ceremony here afterwards. If you would like the civil ceremony photographed too, it can be added as its own booking from €650.

What if fog or rain rolls in during the ceremony?

Fog is no problem for photographs; it quietens the forest and softens faces. Rain calls for the plan we settled in advance, whether a tent on site, a barn or the dining room of the inn. Under dense firs a light shower stays surprisingly dry for a while, but in a thunderstorm the ceremony waits rather than pressing on.
