Why wedding photography in Munich

Hiring a wedding photographer in Munich means working around the city’s calendar before its scenery. The Oktoberfest starts in the second half of September, and a wedding in that fortnight competes with the festival for hotel rooms and taxis. The other Munich constraint is the palaces. The park at Nymphenburg is open to everyone, but the courtyard and the Residenz require chargeable permission from the Bavarian palace administration for commercial photography, and wedding coverage counts. So couple portraits here tend to happen in the landscaped park behind the palace or down on the Isar. Plenty of couples also marry outside the city, at Lake Starnberg or the Tegernsee, which makes travel time part of the running order rather than an afterthought.

Summer Saturdays in Munich go twelve to eighteen months ahead. October brings the clearest air and colour in the Englischer Garten, though its first days often still belong to the Oktoberfest, so a date just after is calmer. Föhn days cluster in spring and late autumn; on those evenings the Alps appear behind the city from the Olympiaberg. Nobody can promise one for a fixed date, but the planning call covers what we do if it happens.

The couple portraits move to the hour before sunset rather than straight after the ceremony: the Isar gravel banks near the Reichenbachbrücke in summer, the quieter park behind Nymphenburg in spring and autumn. If the reception is on a lake, the drive is written into the schedule and the portraits happen on the shore instead. A wet-weather alternative is fixed in advance. You receive a preview set within 48 hours and the full gallery of 500 photographs within three weeks.

    Olympiaberg

    A rubble hill from the war, sixty metres above the plain, and the only point from which the city and the Alpine chain fall into one frame. On a clear October evening half of Munich is up there; on the others you have it to yourself.

    Eisbach und Monopteros, Englischer Garten

    The Eisbach wave is the one Munich subject that moves, and it runs around the clock. The Monopteros two hundred metres on gives the view south across the meadow to the towers of the old town — empty in the morning, a picnic ground from eleven.

    Schloss Nymphenburg

    The canal axis in front of the palace is five hundred metres of symmetry and nearly photographs itself. The park behind is laid out in the English manner and far less walked — for a wedding report it is the actual destination, not the facade.

    Isarkiesbänke bei der Reichenbachbrücke

    Turquoise meltwater, white gravel and pines, five minutes from the centre. In high summer it is busy, but the banks are long enough that two hundred metres upstream you are alone.

    Viktualienmarkt und Asamkirche

    The market gives colour and movement; the Asamkirche two hundred metres on gives the opposite — a baroque interior eight metres wide in which three people are already a crowd. Together they make a session that does not look like a postcard.

Questions

Can we have photographs in the Nymphenburg palace courtyard?

Yes, with permission. The Bavarian palace administration requires it for commercial photography in the courtyard and sets the fee case by case. We apply and invoice the fee separately. The public park behind the palace needs nothing of the kind, and for portraits it is the calmer choice in any case.

We live abroad. Can we plan a Munich wedding with you remotely?

Yes. The planning call works over video, and the running order is agreed in writing before the day. Send the addresses of the hotel, ceremony and reception early, because driving times between the city and the lakes shape the schedule more than anything else. Enquiries go through the form on the site, and we reply by email or phone.

Is a wedding during the Oktoberfest a bad idea?

In the city centre, usually. Hotels fill and prices climb for the whole fortnight, and the area around the Theresienwiese is congested. A reception outside Munich barely notices it, but guests flying in still pass through the city, so their accommodation needs booking unusually early.
