Why wedding photography in Cologne

Couples who hire a Cologne wedding photographer are often surprised by how much of the day turns on one river crossing. The cathedral stands on the west bank and only fits a frame whole from Deutz, on the opposite side, and only looks right there in the late afternoon. So a Cologne wedding that wants the cathedral needs twenty quiet minutes and a bridge built into the running order. Many international couples living here skip that and use the neighbourhood they actually know instead, the Belgian Quarter with its plane trees or the old-town lanes near the town hall. Both are good choices. What matters is making the choice at the planning call, well before the day, rather than on the pavement with the guests waiting.

The season runs from May to September, and June Saturdays in Cologne are taken a year to eighteen months out. Fridays and October dates stay open longer. Avoid Carnival week unless you want it as part of the story: from the Thursday before Lent to Ash Wednesday the centre is closed to anything planned. In winter the cathedral is floodlit and blue hour arrives mid-afternoon; in June the golden hour on the Rhine boulevard lasts until nearly ten at night.

A covered wet-weather spot is fixed during the walk-through. A preview set arrives within 48 hours and the full gallery, every frame in black and white too, within three weeks.

    Five hundred metres of stepped seating at the water’s edge, built as a grandstand for exactly this view. In the afternoon the sun is behind you and lights the cathedral and old town from the front; in the morning the same thing is a silhouette.

    Hohenzollernbrücke

    The busiest railway bridge in Germany, with the footway running right alongside it. The padlocks on the railing are the famous subject and the passing trains are the better one — both need you to stand still, because a live line runs a metre to the left.

    Nineteenth-century facades, plane trees and cafés around the Brüsseler Platz, far enough from the cathedral that nobody asks where you are. This is the address for lifestyle and personal-branding work where the city should be a backdrop rather than the lead.

    Forty hectares of 1957 garden exhibition directly behind the Rhine boulevard: lawns, mature trees and enough space that a family with three children is in nobody’s way. The cable car above it runs from April to October.

    The coloured gabled houses on the Fischmarkt are the Cologne postcard, and they work for exactly one hour — early on a Sunday, before the terraces open. After that the square is full of chairs and the subject is gone.

Questions

We live abroad and are marrying in Cologne. Can the planning happen remotely?

Yes. The planning call works well over video, and the location walk-through is done on our side and shared with you afterwards, with notes on light and timing. What we need from you early is the ceremony time and venue, because those two facts fix when the couple portraits can happen.

Can our guests be in the cathedral shots as well?

A small group, yes; forty people on the Rhine boulevard steps is harder, because the steps are public and busy on summer evenings. The usual answer is a group photograph at the venue and a short trip across the river for the two of you. That keeps guests fed and the cathedral light intact.

Does the ceremony language change how you photograph it?

Not really. Whether the ceremony is in German, English or both, the moments that matter follow a recognisable order, and we agree beforehand on the vows, the rings and the exit. A bilingual ceremony is simply a few minutes longer, which we allow for in the running order.
