Why proposal session in Black Forest

A Black Forest proposal photographer has an advantage no city can offer, because someone with a long lens on a hiking trail draws no attention at all. People with cameras stand at every viewpoint, and a bay on the Schluchsee or a rock above a valley gives enough distance to work unseen from thirty to fifty metres. The harder part is the pretext. Persuading your partner up the Hornisgrinde at six in the morning takes a good story, even if the fog below makes for the strongest image of the year. Easier options are an evening walk by the lake after dinner, or a stop at the Triberg waterfalls on a day out, where you will pay admission and share the boardwalks. For visitors touring the region, the best spot is whichever fits a day you would have planned anyway.

For a lakeside proposal in the evening, come between May and September and meet an hour before sunset. Above the fog it only works from late September to mid-November, and only on days the previous evening’s forecast confirms, which is why a proposal tied to a fixed date such as an anniversary belongs by a lake instead. The Triberg falls look best under cloud and carry the most water in May. Allow two to three weeks’ notice, and more in October.

How the session runs

Beforehand we agree on the place, the time and the signal, and you receive a photograph of the spot where you should stop. At the Schluchsee we pick a bay away from the bathing areas that you pass on the shore path, and wait at a distance by the trees. At Triberg we look for a stretch of boardwalk where you can turn to each other undisturbed. Afterwards we come over for 30 minutes of portraits before the light fades. Mobile signal is patchy in some valleys, so we agree a visible gesture, not a text. First images arrive that evening, and 35 edited photographs in total.

    Hornisgrinde und Mummelsee

    At eleven hundred metres the highest point of the northern Black Forest, with a raised bog on top and the Mummelsee a little over a hundred metres below. In an inversion you stand above the fog here; on an ordinary day it is a bare ridge with a long view into the Rhine plain.

    Triberger Wasserfälle

    A hundred and sixty-three metres of drop over seven stages, with boardwalks alongside. Direct sun is the enemy here — the contrast between water and shade goes past what is usable. An overcast day is the right condition, and in May the fall carries the most water.

    Schluchsee und Feldberg

    The largest lake in the Black Forest at nine hundred metres, with the Feldberg behind it. Eighteen kilometres of shore are walkable, so even in August there is a bay with nobody in it — and in winter there is reliable snow here.

    Gutach und die Schwarzwaldhöfe

    The deep hipped roofs the region is known for stand singly in meadow valleys rather than in villages. From the public tracks you get them with the slope and the wood behind; you go onto a farm itself only when somebody has agreed to it.

    Ravennaschlucht und Höllental

    A tight gorge with a forty-metre railway viaduct across it, under which a Christmas market stands in December. The rest of the year it is a forest track along a stream, with the light coming down through the firs.

Questions

What if it pours or thick fog rolls in on the day?

Light fog in the forest looks calm and mysterious in photographs and is no reason to cancel. In steady rain we postpone if your dates allow, or switch to the Triberg waterfalls, where an overcast sky gives the better light anyway. The fallback location is agreed during the planning call.

Can I propose at a farmhouse or in front of a chapel?

Yes, if the owners agree. The farms are working private businesses, and chapels usually belong to a parish or a family. Ask in good time and mention that photographs will be taken. From a public path, a farmhouse with its meadow and forest can also be framed well without stepping onto the property.

We are touring by car. Where fits into a day out?

Triberg sits in the middle of the forest and suits a stop between north and south, with parking near the falls. The Schwarzwaldhochstraße between Baden-Baden and Freudenstadt passes the Mummelsee and several viewpoints. Tell us your route and overnight stops, and we will suggest a place that does not add an extra hour of driving.
