Summer afternoons can bring thunderstorms on the heights, so an outdoor ceremony needs a covered alternative. Start planning twelve to eighteen months ahead, because a civil marriage in Germany can involve months of paperwork alone.

How the session runs

Planning happens over video calls: the running order, the light at your venue for the hour of the ceremony, and where portraits take place, ideally within walking distance. The evening before, we spend an hour at your welcome drinks, so guests have met the camera before the day. On the wedding day twelve hours cover getting ready, the ceremony, the reception, portraits in the hour before sunset and the start of the party. Timings allow for mountain roads, since twenty minutes on a map can become thirty with a coach behind a tractor. The full gallery of 600 edited photographs follows within three weeks.

    Hornisgrinde und Mummelsee

    At eleven hundred metres the highest point of the northern Black Forest, with a raised bog on top and the Mummelsee a little over a hundred metres below. In an inversion you stand above the fog here; on an ordinary day it is a bare ridge with a long view into the Rhine plain.

    Triberger Wasserfälle

    A hundred and sixty-three metres of drop over seven stages, with boardwalks alongside. Direct sun is the enemy here — the contrast between water and shade goes past what is usable. An overcast day is the right condition, and in May the fall carries the most water.

    Schluchsee und Feldberg

    The largest lake in the Black Forest at nine hundred metres, with the Feldberg behind it. Eighteen kilometres of shore are walkable, so even in August there is a bay with nobody in it — and in winter there is reliable snow here.

    Gutach und die Schwarzwaldhöfe

    The deep hipped roofs the region is known for stand singly in meadow valleys rather than in villages. From the public tracks you get them with the slope and the wood behind; you go onto a farm itself only when somebody has agreed to it.

    Ravennaschlucht und Höllental

    A tight gorge with a forty-metre railway viaduct across it, under which a Christmas market stands in December. The rest of the year it is a forest track along a stream, with the light coming down through the firs.

Which airport should our guests fly into?

It depends on the area you choose. For the south, EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg and Zurich are the closest large airports. For the north, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden is nearest, with Stuttgart and Frankfurt further away but better connected. Guests coming by rail usually change at Freiburg or Baden-Baden onto regional trains or a pre-booked transfer.

Can we marry legally in the Black Forest?

Yes, at the Standesamt of the municipality, and several offer approved venues outside the town hall. For non-residents, the registry office asks for documents that can take months to assemble and may need certified translations. Many couples therefore marry at home and hold a humanist ceremony here, which has no legal effect but no paperwork either.

What happens if a storm or heavy rain arrives on the wedding day?

The covered alternative is fixed in the running order before you fly, whether a barn, a conservatory or the hotel’s own hall. Fog is not a problem for photographs and often improves them. Light rain under firs photographs well. A thunderstorm, on the other hand, moves the ceremony by an hour rather than being endured, and the timeline allows for that.
