Why holiday and city session in Munich

Booking a vacation photographer in Munich is mostly about choosing one neighbourhood and the hour it is at its best, because an hour does not stretch to crossing the city. Marienplatz is the obvious start and the worst one: it is crowded from mid-morning, and the tourist groups make every frame busy. Two alternatives sit close by. The Viktualienmarkt and the Asamkirche give colour and baroque detail within two hundred metres of each other, best on a weekday morning. The Englischer Garten gives the Eisbach surfers and the Monopteros view back over the old town’s towers, best soon after sunrise. If your trip falls on a Föhn day, the Alps can even appear behind the skyline.

Late spring and October are the most pleasant months, though the Oktoberfest fortnight fills hotels and the centre, so avoid it unless the festival is the point. In summer, book an early morning or late afternoon slot. Weekday mornings suit the market; sunrise suits the park. Book as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for a weekend.

Choose the neighbourhood when you enquire, and we plan a short route from near your hotel or a U-Bahn station. In the old town we begin at the Viktualienmarkt among the stalls, walk the few minutes to the Asamkirche for a brief stop inside, and finish in the quieter lanes nearby. In the park we start at the Eisbach wave and walk up to the Monopteros. The hour yields about 30 edited photographs, delivered to a private gallery within 48 to 72 hours.

    Olympiaberg

    A rubble hill from the war, sixty metres above the plain, and the only point from which the city and the Alpine chain fall into one frame. On a clear October evening half of Munich is up there; on the others you have it to yourself.

    The Eisbach wave is the one Munich subject that moves, and it runs around the clock. The Monopteros two hundred metres on gives the view south across the meadow to the towers of the old town — empty in the morning, a picnic ground from eleven.

    Schloss Nymphenburg

    The canal axis in front of the palace is five hundred metres of symmetry and nearly photographs itself. The park behind is laid out in the English manner and far less walked — for a wedding report it is the actual destination, not the facade.

    Isarkiesbänke bei der Reichenbachbrücke

    Turquoise meltwater, white gravel and pines, five minutes from the centre. In high summer it is busy, but the banks are long enough that two hundred metres upstream you are alone.

    Viktualienmarkt und Asamkirche

    The market gives colour and movement; the Asamkirche two hundred metres on gives the opposite — a baroque interior eight metres wide in which three people are already a crowd. Together they make a session that does not look like a postcard.

Questions

Can we do Marienplatz and the Englischer Garten in one hour?

Not comfortably. The walk between them eats a good part of the hour, and Marienplatz is rarely quiet enough for relaxed photographs. Pick one: the old town around the Viktualienmarkt, or the park from the Eisbach to the Monopteros. Both give two distinct backdrops within a few minutes’ walk.

Should we wear traditional Bavarian clothing?

Only if you would wear it anyway. Dirndl and lederhosen look natural during the Oktoberfest and at a beer garden, and a little like costume on a quiet morning elsewhere. If you do want them, the Englischer Garten suits them better than the old town streets.

Our flight is delayed. Can we move the session?
