A holiday photoshoot on Lake Constance fits neatly into a trip, because each lakeside town is small enough to cover in an hour on foot. Visitors come for the water, the ferries, the old towns and the view across to Switzerland and Austria, and most of them leave with phone photographs in which somebody is always missing. Late afternoon or early morning avoids the midday crowds in the towns and the harsh summer sun. April and October give clearer views towards the Alps; July and August are warm but hazy. We meet at a landmark in your chosen town, such as the lion at Lindau harbour or the ferry landing in Meersburg, and walk for an hour through one neighbourhood.     Hafen Lindau

    A stone lion and a lighthouse flank the harbour mouth, with the lake behind them and, in clear air, the Alps. The mole faces south, so the morning light comes in from the side and soft; during the day it is the most photographed point on the whole lake.

    Insel Mainau

    Forty-five hectares of park with a baroque palace, a palm house, and half a million tulips in spring. The place is run and supervised — the agreement needs lead time, but it is also why the island in April does not look like a car park.

    Meersburg, Unterstadt und Rebhänge

    A medieval lower town at the water’s edge with steep vineyards above it looking out over the lake. The place is small enough to walk from the promenade into the vines in twenty minutes — two entirely different registers with no driving in between.

    Wallfahrtskirche Birnau

    A pink rococo church standing alone above the vineyards and looking south across the lake. The interior is bright and white and needs no added light; the forecourt gives you church, vines and lake in a single frame.

    Halbinsel Höri und Radolfzeller Aach

    The quietest part of the German shore: orchard meadows, reed beds and shallow water. In April the fruit trees bloom here a fortnight before anywhere else; in November the fog stands in the reeds in the morning. Both are narrow windows.

Questions

Is an hour enough to see the lake in the photographs?

Yes, because in any lakeside town the water is never more than a few minutes away. An hour covers the waterfront and one nearby backdrop, with around thirty usable frames. What it does not cover is travelling between towns, so choose one and let the route stay there.

We are a group of friends. Does that work?

It works well. A group simply means spending a little more of the hour on the shared photographs and a little less on pairs. Friends usually relax quickly in front of the camera, and the walk itself gives natural moments between the posed ones.

What happens if it rains during our holiday?

Where your stay allows, we move the session to another day. A light shower is often workable, and wet cobbles in the old towns reflect nicely. We decide together in the morning, so your day is not left hanging while you wait for an answer.
