Why holiday and city session in Berlin

A holiday photoshoot in Berlin works best when it fits the trip rather than the other way round. Visitors often arrive with a long list — the Brandenburg Gate, the East Side Gallery, the Fernsehturm — spread across a city several times the size they expect. An hour cannot join them all without most of it being spent travelling. So the session is planned around the neighbourhood where you are staying or already plan to be. From a hotel in Mitte that means the Spree embankment and the museum island; from Friedrichshain, the East Side Gallery and the Oberbaumbrücke next to it; from Kreuzberg, the canal. Each gives you recognisably Berlin frames within a short walk, and you get back an hour of your holiday.

Early mornings are when Berlin’s landmarks belong to you: the museum island before eight, the Brandenburg Gate before the tour groups. Summer evenings are long, with sunset after nine. In December the light is gone before four, so an early afternoon slot is best. Sundays are quieter in many areas, since most shops in Germany are closed.

How the session runs

Tell us where you are staying and when you are free, and we will propose a route within one neighbourhood. In Friedrichshain, for example, we meet at the east end of the Oberbaumbrücke, walk along the river side of the East Side Gallery and finish on the bridge as the light comes through its arches. The pace is relaxed, with no fixed poses, and we can stop for a coffee if it suits you. Thirty edited photographs reach your private gallery within 48 to 72 hours — often before your flight home.

Where we photograph in Berlin

    Oberbaumbrücke und Landwehrkanal

    The bridge faces west along the Spree, so the evening sun sits inside it. The Landwehrkanal alongside is ten minutes of plane trees with no tourists in it, and works all year — in winter because the bare branches let the reflections in the water through.

    Tempelhofer Feld

    Three hundred hectares of runway with not one building behind it — the only place in Berlin with a real horizon. Which is exactly why it is the best backlight in the city and the worst place in a wind, and there is always a wind.

    Museumsinsel und Bodemuseum

    The prow of the Bode-Museum splits the Spree and is the one Berlin frame that needs no explaining. At seven it is yours; from ten the coach parties are standing on the Monbijou bridge you photograph it from.

    Viktoriapark und Kreuzberg

    The only hill the city has: sixty-six metres, an artificial waterfall and a view north over the roofs. Not a mountain, but the one place a Berlin session gets any height at all.

    Sowjetisches Ehrenmal und Plänterwald, Treptow

    A three-hundred-metre axis between weeping willows, built to make people look small — which is exactly why it works for two of them. The Plänterwald next to it is actual forest, ten minutes from the S-Bahn, and in October the best colour in the city.

Questions

We only have a free hour on our last morning. Is that enough?

Yes, and a morning is often the best choice in Berlin. Meet close to your hotel, keep luggage stored at reception, and we spend the hour in one area without crowds. The gallery follows within two or three days, so you can share the photographs once you are home.

Can we include the Brandenburg Gate without crowds in the background?

Only really at dawn or shortly after. By mid-morning Pariser Platz is full throughout the year. An early start there can be combined with the nearby Tiergarten, where tree-lined paths give quieter frames once the square fills up.

How do we reach the meeting point if we do not know the city?

We send a pinned map location and the nearest U-Bahn or S-Bahn station, with the exit to use. Most routes start within fifteen minutes of central hotels. If you are travelling with children or have limited mobility, tell us and we will choose a meeting point you can reach without long walks.
