For a couple photoshoot in Munich, the question is less which landmark and more at what hour it empties out. The Monopteros in the Englischer Garten is yours in the early morning and a picnic lawn by late morning. The Isar gravel banks are lively on summer evenings but long enough that a short walk upstream leaves the crowd behind. Munich also has a weather event no other German city offers: on Föhn days the Alps stand sharp behind the skyline, and because a Föhn shows up in the forecast two or three days out, a flexible booking can catch one. Since the session covers two locations on foot, we pair spots that sit close together rather than crossing town.
The Englischer Garten works best in the first hour after sunrise; the Isar in late afternoon from mid-June to the end of August. The Viktualienmarkt and Asamkirche suit weekday mornings. October is the city’s strongest month, but during the Oktoberfest fortnight we keep away from the centre. In January and February high fog often sits over Munich, and that flat, soft light flatters faces rather than spoiling the session.
How the session runs
We start by walking and talking for a few minutes before anything is arranged. A morning session begins at the Eisbach wave, where the surfers add movement, then crosses the meadow up to the Monopteros and its view of the old town’s towers. A summer afternoon session starts by the Reichenbachbrücke and follows the gravel banks upstream until it goes quiet. Either route fills ninety minutes, needs no permit, and ends with 40 edited photographs in a private gallery within 48 to 72 hours.
