A trade fair photographer in Munich works on one of Europe’s largest exhibition grounds, in Riem on the city’s eastern edge. It hosts international flagship shows, among them bauma, which fills the outdoor area every three years, and EXPO REAL for the property industry each October. That shapes the work in two ways. The halls are large and the distances long, so the day is planned around stand numbers and the programme rather than improvised. And big fairs draw so many visitors that hotels in Munich and the surrounding area sell out early. An exhibitor flying a photographer in pays travel and accommodation at fair rates — one good reason to book locally.

The crucial window is the hour before the doors open, usually between eight and nine. The opening day suits press images; the second or third day suits busy conversation scenes. How the session runs

The day before, we agree a shot list: stand architecture, products, team, conversations, presentations. From opening, the focus shifts to people, demonstrations and meetings on the stand. Aisles and hall views are taken only under the accreditation we arrange with the organiser. A press and social media selection reaches you that evening, from 300 edited photographs covering six hours on site.

    A rubble hill from the war, sixty metres above the plain, and the only point from which the city and the Alpine chain fall into one frame. On a clear October evening half of Munich is up there; on the others you have it to yourself.

    The Eisbach wave is the one Munich subject that moves, and it runs around the clock. The Monopteros two hundred metres on gives the view south across the meadow to the towers of the old town — empty in the morning, a picnic ground from eleven.

    Schloss Nymphenburg

    The canal axis in front of the palace is five hundred metres of symmetry and nearly photographs itself. The park behind is laid out in the English manner and far less walked — for a wedding report it is the actual destination, not the facade.

    Isarkiesbänke bei der Reichenbachbrücke

    Turquoise meltwater, white gravel and pines, five minutes from the centre. In high summer it is busy, but the banks are long enough that two hundred metres upstream you are alone.

    Viktualienmarkt und Asamkirche

    The market gives colour and movement; the Asamkirche two hundred metres on gives the opposite — a baroque interior eight metres wide in which three people are already a crowd. Together they make a session that does not look like a postcard.

Questions

Can you photograph our machines on the outdoor grounds?

Yes, if the accreditation covers it and your exhibit stands outside. At outdoor shows such as bauma we plan exterior frames around the sun and schedule them in the morning where possible, before the grounds fill with visitors.

Our marketing team is abroad. How do they receive images?

Through a private online gallery that anyone with the link can open, so colleagues in another time zone can download the evening selection as soon as it is uploaded. If they need specific crops or file sizes for a press portal, send the specification beforehand.

Is one day enough for a four-day fair?

For most exhibitors, yes: stand views, team and conversations fit into one well-chosen day. Product launches, press conferences or evening receptions on other days are booked separately. We go through your fair programme together and suggest which day gives the most.
