Why proposal session in Cologne
A proposal photographer in Cologne needs two things the city does not always give: a clear line of sight and somewhere to stand without looking like a photographer. The Hohenzollern Bridge fails on both counts, with its busy footway, passing trains and steady stream of walkers. The Rheinboulevard on the Deutz bank passes on both. Its wide steps face the cathedral across the water, there are open sightlines along the river, and someone sitting there with a long lens is just another visitor watching the view. For a quieter setting, the Rheinpark behind it has paths under old trees where the evening is nearly empty. The bridge still has its place afterwards, when secrecy no longer matters and there is a padlock to fix.
Time the question for the last hour before sunset, when the cathedral is lit from the front, or for winter blue hour, when it is floodlit. Summer weekends put crowds on the steps, so a weekday evening keeps the sightline open. New Year’s Eve and Carnival week are out. If you are visiting from abroad, book two or three weeks ahead so we have time to agree on the place and the signal over email.
How the session runs
The briefing fixes the stretch of steps where you will stop, the direction you will walk in from and the signal that shows it is happening. On the evening the photographer arrives ten minutes early and sits among everyone else. The proposal itself is photographed on a long lens from thirty to fifty metres, until there is an answer. Then the photographer joins you, and we have thirty minutes for portraits along the river and on the bridge. A first set reaches you that same evening; the rest of the thirty-five edited photographs follow in a private gallery.
