Expecting a baby far from your own family changes what a maternity photographer in Cologne is for. The photographs are often the ones parents and grandparents abroad will see first, so the setting tends to matter more: a recognisable bank of the Rhine, or the flat that will be the baby’s first home. The city supports both. The Rheinpark and the Deutz bank give open sky, soft evening light and short distances, which is what a body at thirty-two weeks wants. Many Cologne flats in older buildings have tall windows and high ceilings that give a gentle, even light indoors. Which one suits you usually comes down to the calendar rather than taste, because February by the river is cold.

The best window is between weeks 28 and 34, and a few weeks earlier for twins. May, June and September are the kindest months outdoors; in high summer the park is too hot at midday, so sessions move to the evening. From November to February the flat is the better choice, perhaps with fifteen minutes at blue hour on the Deutz bank while the cathedral is floodlit.

How the session runs

Outdoors, we start under the older trees of the Rheinpark, where there are benches to rest on, and finish with a few minutes on the river steps. At home, all we need is the room with the largest window, and only the corner being photographed needs tidying. Partners and older siblings are included and join in the second half, so the first half stays calm. Seventy-five minutes at most, shorter if your feet say so, and thirty edited photographs within 48 to 72 hours.

    Five hundred metres of stepped seating at the water’s edge, built as a grandstand for exactly this view. In the afternoon the sun is behind you and lights the cathedral and old town from the front; in the morning the same thing is a silhouette.

    The busiest railway bridge in Germany, with the footway running right alongside it. The padlocks on the railing are the famous subject and the passing trains are the better one — both need you to stand still, because a live line runs a metre to the left.

    Nineteenth-century facades, plane trees and cafés around the Brüsseler Platz, far enough from the cathedral that nobody asks where you are. This is the address for lifestyle and personal-branding work where the city should be a backdrop rather than the lead.

    The coloured gabled houses on the Fischmarkt are the Cologne postcard, and they work for exactly one hour — early on a Sunday, before the terraces open. After that the square is full of chairs and the subject is gone.

Questions

Can the session include our dog?

Yes, and in the Rheinpark that works well, since there is space to keep the lead loose. Please bring someone who can hold the dog between frames, or plan for the dog to join only in the second half. Dogs, like children, tend to settle once the camera stops being new.

We live outside the centre. Do you still come to us?

Yes. Home sessions happen across the city and in the surrounding towns listed for Cologne, including Bonn, Leverkusen and Bergisch Gladbach, with no travel charge. For outdoor sessions we suggest a green space close to where you live rather than a long drive into the centre.

Is it awkward to be photographed at home?

Less than people expect. At home there are no passers-by, you can sit down whenever you want and there is a kitchen for a glass of water. We start with ordinary things, such as the two of you by the window or folding tiny clothes, and the posing comes naturally from there.
