Why honeymoon session in Heidelberg

A Heidelberg honeymoon photographer works with couples who came for exactly what the town is known for: the castle ruin above the river, the old bridge and the lanes of a university town that painters and photographers have returned to since the Romantic era. Honeymooners have one advantage over day-trippers — they are usually staying overnight, which means the quiet ends of the day are available. That matters here more than in most places, because the town fills between ten and five. Ninety minutes is enough for two backdrops within walking distance, and in Heidelberg the natural pair is the bridge and riverbank below, followed by the view from the Philosophenweg above, looking back across the Neckar.

For the Philosophenweg, start about ninety minutes before sunset so the light is on the castle when you reach the top. For the bridge, start before eight. Late October to mid-November is the loveliest window; May and June are green but crowded. If your honeymoon falls between late November and Christmas, the market lights make a strong evening backdrop.

How the session runs

In the evening version we meet at the old town end of the old bridge and photograph the two of you on the bridge and by the gate tower as the light warms. We then cross the river and climb the Schlangenweg to the Philosophenweg, with a pause at the top before the main portraits against the castle view. The morning version runs the other way along the riverbank. Everything is on foot and needs no permit. Your private gallery of forty edited photographs is ready two or three days later.

    The view the town is known for: castle, old bridge and old town on a single line, from above and across the river. It faces south, so it is right in the afternoon and exactly wrong in the morning.

    A baroque sandstone bridge with a gate tower, occupied by groups by the minute from ten. The one hour in which it is yours is before eight — after that every frame is a frame with strangers in it.

    Schlossgarten und Altan

    The terrace on the Altan looks straight over the old town and down the valley — the view Turner painted. The garden in front of it is broad enough to step out of the flow of visitors, which the courtyard itself does not allow.

    Neckarwiese

    A kilometre of riverside meadow on the north bank with the castle on the far side. Half the student body sits here in the evening, and that is exactly what makes it the least self-conscious place in town — nobody looks when somebody is being photographed.

    Heiliggeistkirche und Marktplatz

    Red sandstone over a square tight enough that the facade throws the light back. For a church wedding it is the central address in the old town; for anything else, early Sunday is worth it, before the market stalls and the terraces take the square.

Questions

Should we wear our wedding outfits?

Only if you want those photographs specifically. Most honeymoon couples prefer what they would wear on a good evening out, which suits the relaxed feel of the session. If you do bring a dress, note the Schlangenweg climb and choose a morning route along the river instead.

We are touring Germany. Can we book at short notice?

Often, yes, especially on weekdays and outside May, June and September. Send your dates and hotel through the enquiry form and we reply by email or phone. The sooner we know, the better we can match the hour to the light.

Can the session include a dinner or a boat trip?

The ninety minutes are designed around walking between two spots. A short stop at a café terrace fits easily. For a longer dinner or a river cruise, it is better to book extra time, so the portraits in good light are not squeezed at the end.
