Why maternity session in Hamburg

A maternity photoshoot in Hamburg has a fixed window, weeks 28 to 34, and the calendar month that window lands in decides nearly everything else. If it falls between May and September, outdoors has a lot going for it: evening light along the Außenalster, or the Elbe beach, where a breeze does something to a dress that a living room never will. If it falls in November or December, days are short and often blustery, and your own flat by a window is the calmer and warmer choice. Both options are included in the price. We decide together a few weeks beforehand, once the month is clear, rather than on the morning itself after checking a forecast.

Enquire around week 20 so the date lands safely inside weeks 28 to 34. Outdoors in summer the session goes in the hour before sunset, which in June can be late in the evening; an earlier slot in open shade works just as well. In winter it happens at midday or indoors, where the hour matters much less.

How the session runs

Outdoors we pick a place that needs little walking: the east shore of the Außenalster, which holds the evening light, or the Elbe beach with ships passing behind. At home the largest window is the centre of things and the rest of the flat can stay as it is. Partner and older siblings are included and usually join in the second half. There are breaks to sit whenever you need one. After 75 minutes we finish, and thirty edited frames reach you two to three days later.

Where we photograph in Hamburg

    Speicherstadt und Wasserschloss

    Red brick over narrow canals, and the alleys are tight enough that direct sun only reaches in around midday. So this is not a golden-hour location but a blue-hour one: from dusk the Speicherstadt is lit and looks like the thing it holds the World Heritage listing for.

    Plaza der Elbphilharmonie

    Thirty-seven metres above the harbour, open on every side, and free to enter — you only need a timed slot booked in advance. The west side gives you the Elbe and the cranes, the east side the Speicherstadt, and the circuit takes ten minutes.

    Treppenviertel Blankenese

    Some five thousand steps between captains’ houses falling south to the Elbe — Hamburg’s only slope and its only place with afternoon light from the front. People live here, so the work is quiet and without a rig.

    Alsterwiesen und Außenalster

    An inland lake in the middle of the city with a seven-kilometre path round it and sails on it into October. The west bank takes the morning and the east bank the evening — a distinction that matters more here than elsewhere, because there is no shade to hide behind.

    Alter Elbtunnel

    Four hundred metres of framed tube twenty-four metres under the Elbe, symmetrical to the vanishing point and identical in any weather. This is the fallback when it is raining sideways outside — and often the best frame of the day.

Questions

Is the Elbe beach a good idea on a windy day?

In a light breeze, yes, because a flowing dress picks up movement. In a strong wind the riverside gets cold and restless quickly, so we move to the more sheltered Alster or into a park. We look at the forecast together the day before.

My due date is in January. Indoors or outdoors?

Week 30 then falls in late autumn in Hamburg, and we would suggest home. Days are short, the outdoor light is only usable around midday, and standing for long in the cold is unpleasant. A bright window gives calmer photographs at that time of year.

Can the session be in English?

Yes, entirely. Many of the families we photograph in Hamburg have moved here for work, and the planning, the session and every message about it can be in English. Just tell us when you enquire, and include your due date so we can suggest suitable weeks.
