Why newborn session in Berlin

A newborn photographer in Berlin who works at your home spares you the part of the day nobody needs in the first weeks: carrying a tiny baby down Altbau stairs, into a tram or taxi and across the city. Instead, the session comes to you, and your flat usually has what it needs. Pre-war buildings here often have tall windows that bring in enough daylight to work without flash, and newer flats with floor-length glazing do just as well. Your baby can sleep, feed and be changed in familiar surroundings, and the day keeps its rhythm. For parents new to Berlin, far from family, it can also be the first calm record of the household they are building here.

The first three weeks are the window in which newborns sleep deeply and curl up comfortably. Book during pregnancy using your due date, then fix the exact day once the baby has arrived. Late mornings tend to work best: light is at its brightest and the midwife’s visit is often already over.

How the session runs

We need a room where the bed or sofa can sit near the largest window, heated a little warmer than usual. Only the area in the frame needs tidying. We start with the baby asleep, then add photographs with parents and siblings. We pause for feeding or changing as often as needed; the two hours allow for that. There is no flash and no complicated posing, only daylight and gentle handling. Thirty edited photographs follow within a week.

Where we photograph in Berlin

  1. 01

    Oberbaumbrücke und Landwehrkanal

The bridge faces west along the Spree, so the evening sun sits inside it. The Landwehrkanal alongside is ten minutes of plane trees with no tourists in it, and works all year — in winter because the bare branches let the reflections in the water through.

    Best time:
    The last hour before sunset
    Permit:
Free — public street and towpath
  2. 02

    Tempelhofer Feld

Three hundred hectares of runway with not one building behind it — the only place in Berlin with a real horizon. Which is exactly why it is the best backlight in the city and the worst place in a wind, and there is always a wind.

    Best time:
The hour before sunset, in a westerly
    Permit:
Free privately. Commercially: registration with Grün Berlin GmbH is required
  3. 03

    Museumsinsel und Bodemuseum

The prow of the Bode-Museum splits the Spree and is the one Berlin frame that needs no explaining. At seven it is yours; from ten the coach parties are standing on the Monbijou bridge you photograph it from.

    Best time:
    Before eight in the morning
    Permit:
Outside: free. Courtyards and colonnades: commercial work needs written permission from the SPK
  4. 04

    Viktoriapark und Kreuzberg

The only hill the city has: sixty-six metres, an artificial waterfall and a view north over the roofs. Not a mountain, but the one place a Berlin session gets any height at all.

    Best time:
    Late afternoon
    Permit:
    Free — public park
  5. 05

    Sowjetisches Ehrenmal und Plänterwald, Treptow

A three-hundred-metre axis between weeping willows, built to make people look small — which is exactly why it works for two of them. The Plänterwald next to it is actual forest, ten minutes from the S-Bahn, and in October the best colour in the city.

    Best time:
    Morning, on a weekday
    Permit:
Free — a memorial; photography allowed, tripods restricted

Questions

We are new to Germany. What is a Hebamme, and does her visit affect the session?

A Hebamme is a midwife who, in Germany, usually visits at home during the first weeks after birth. The visits are short and often in the morning. We schedule the session around them so neither is rushed, and you can simply tell us the times once you know them.

Our flat is small. Is there enough space?

Yes. A newborn session needs little more than a bed or sofa by a window and room for the photographer to stand. The framing is close, so the rest of the flat does not appear. Many Berlin flats are compact, and the results depend far more on window light than on floor area.

It gets dark early in a Berlin winter. Is daylight enough?

If we meet around midday, yes. Between roughly eleven and two, window light is bright enough even in December. After half past two it fades quickly, so in the darker months we avoid afternoon sessions and move the bed or sofa as close to the window as possible.
