A food photographer in Cologne works across two quite different traditions. The brewhouses serve Kölsch in slim glasses under dark wood, with dishes that are hearty rather than delicate. Newer kitchens in Ehrenfeld, the Südstadt and the Belgian Quarter plate carefully in bright rooms. Both need photographs that match what a guest will actually find, and a single house style applied to every venue gets that wrong. A brewhouse plate should look generous, not like tasting-menu food, and a refined menu should not be lit like a canteen. International owners opening in Cologne often underestimate this, so the first conversation is about who the guests are. The shoot happens in your room, with your own tableware, in the light your diners see, supplemented only where it is missing.

The classic slot is between lunch and dinner service, roughly three to five in the afternoon. Many Cologne brewhouses stay open all day, though, and there a morning before opening works better. How the session runs

Questions

We are opening a new restaurant. Should we shoot before or after opening?

Shortly before, once the menu is final and the room is fully furnished. That gives you images for the launch, the website and the delivery platforms from day one. If the room is not quite finished, photograph the dishes first and add a short room session once the last details are in place.

Do we need to prepare the dishes differently for photographs?

Not really. Plate them as you would for a guest, perhaps slightly more carefully, and send them out one at a time. We avoid food styling tricks that would make the dish look different from what arrives at the table, because guests notice and it undermines the menu.

Can staff appear in the photographs?

Yes, and kitchen and service shots are often the most used. Anyone who appears should agree to it, particularly if the images will be used in advertising. Tell your team in advance, so those who prefer not to be photographed can stay out of frame without an awkward conversation on the day.
