Why product photography in Frankfurt

A product photographer in Frankfurt often works to a deadline set not by the online shop but by the fair calendar. Brands exhibiting at Ambiente or Light + Building need cut-outs for catalogues and press kits before the halls open, and campaign imagery soon after. The neighbourhood adds its own demands. Offenbach, next door, has a long tradition of leather goods, and leather is among the harder materials to light: it has a soft sheen, shows every crease and turns greasy-looking under the wrong light. Glass, metal, lamps and embossed packaging are similarly unforgiving. That is why the quote is based on set-ups rather than item counts, and why we agree beforehand which products can share a set-up, so shop images and campaign frames both fit into three hours without relighting for every piece.

Work backwards from the day you need the images: five working days for the files, plus time for samples and sign-off. For Ambiente exhibitors at the start of the year that often means shooting before the previous year ends, even if samples have only just arrived. For Christmas trading, images should be ready by October at the latest. Time of day barely matters because we bring our own light, though lifestyle frames using window light are best scheduled for the morning.

How the session runs

We shoot at your premises, in your warehouse or in a room we agree on together. What we need is a sturdy table, power and roughly three by three metres of clear floor. The white-background set-up comes first, and similar products pass through it one after another. Then we rebuild for lifestyle frames with props and context. Along the way you compare colours and details on screen against the physical sample. The three hours produce 25 edited photographs, cropped square and vertical for your shop, marketplaces and social media, and delivered within five working days.

    Deutschherrnufer und Flößerbrücke

    The standard skyline view, and rightly so: from here the river, the towers and their reflection are one frame. Twenty minutes after sunset the window light and the sky reach the same brightness — that is the window, and it lasts about a quarter of an hour.

    The footbridge between the old town and Sachsenhausen, padlocks on the railing and the skyline behind you. From nine it is a commuter route; before that it is yours, and the lattice throws long shadows across the deck.

    Römerberg

    Reconstructed timber gables around a small square — built tight, so it takes direct sun only between eleven and two and is evenly soft otherwise. From ten there is a tour group in it; in December there is a Christmas market in it for six weeks.

    Palmengarten

    Twenty hectares of botany with glasshouses that work in any weather — the most reliable wet-weather plan in the city. The palm house is big enough for a group, the tropical houses are not, and in winter every lens in there fogs in seconds.

    Main Tower, Aussichtsplattform

    Two hundred metres above the city and the only publicly accessible tower terrace in Frankfurt. The view runs south over the Main to the Taunus — but no tripods, so this is a place for the couple in the foreground rather than for a long exposure.

Questions

Can you photograph the products we are showing at a fair?

Yes, ideally at your premises before the fair, because hall lighting and stand spots are rarely colour-accurate. The cut-outs then work for the catalogue, the press kit and the shop alike. If you also want the stand photographed with the products on it, that is a separate trade-fair booking with accreditation.

How accurate will the colours of leather and textiles be?

As close to the sample as a screen allows. We shoot with a grey card, compare colours against the real product on a calibrated monitor during the session and note any deviation with you. If you have a binding colour reference, such as a swatch book, please bring it along.

Are 25 images enough for our range?

For a single collection with campaign frames, usually; for an entire shop, rarely. With similar products on one set-up we can produce considerably more cut-outs in three hours, priced separately in the quote.
