Many arrive by coach or train in mid-morning and leave by late afternoon, so the old bridge, the Hauptstraße and the Marktplatz are crowded between ten and five. The hour you book should sit outside that window. Staying overnight makes this easy, because early morning and early evening are both available. Heidelberg is also compact enough that one hour covers two distinct backdrops — the bridge and riverbank, or the bridge and the view from the Philosophenweg — without any transport.
Before eight in the morning the old bridge is empty; the Philosophenweg is best in the two hours before sunset. Late October to mid-November has the best light and fewer coaches. From late November the Christmas market makes the old town atmospheric but busy. Book once your hotel is fixed, particularly for May, June and September weekends.

We are on a day trip from Frankfurt. When should we book?
As early as your train allows. If you can arrive before nine, the bridge is still manageable. Otherwise the last hour before your departure in the evening works well. The middle of the day is the most crowded, so we avoid it unless there is truly no alternative.
Is the castle included in the session?
The castle appears in the frames as a backdrop from the bridge, riverbank or Philosophenweg. Photographing inside the courtyard needs tickets and chargeable permission, which does not suit a one-hour session. If you want to visit the castle, do that before or after we meet.
Can you meet us at our hotel?
If it is in or near the old town, yes, and we start the route from there. For hotels further out, meeting at the bridge saves time that would otherwise come out of the hour. Tell us where you are staying when you enquire, and we suggest the most efficient start.
