The bridge is yours before eight in the morning; the Philosophenweg is right in the last two hours before sunset. The strongest period is late October to mid-November, when the slope behind the castle turns and the coaches thin out. May and June are green but busy. In high summer the valley is still and humid, so an evening on the Neckarwiese works better than a climb.

We are staying in the old town. Where do we meet?
Usually at the old town end of the old bridge, which is a short walk from most hotels in the centre. For an early session we send a pin the evening before. If you are staying on the north bank or in Neuenheim, we can start from there and reverse the route.
Can we be photographed in the castle courtyard?
It is possible but involved. Everyone needs a ticket for the courtyard, and commercial photography requires chargeable permission from the state palaces administration. For a ninety-minute session it rarely pays off, especially since the view of the castle from the Philosophenweg is stronger than any view from inside it.
Is the climb to the Philosophenweg hard?
Short but steep: the Schlangenweg is a mix of steps and ramps and takes around twenty minutes. We pause at the top before shooting. If climbing is not for you, the riverbank and the Neckarwiese both keep the castle in view without any ascent.
