For a Munich proposal photographer, the first job is finding a place that is empty at the moment you need it. The Monopteros sits on a mound in the Englischer Garten, looking south over the meadow to the old town’s towers; early in the morning there is hardly anyone there, by late morning it is crowded. A long lens needs thirty to fifty metres, and the slope gives the photographer that distance without standing out. For something rarer, wait for a Föhn. On those days the Alps rise behind the city, and from the Olympiaberg both fit into one frame. Because a Föhn is visible in the forecast two or three days ahead, a flexible proposal works better here than almost anywhere.
The first hour after sunrise is quietest at the Monopteros, which in June means very early. The Olympiaberg is worth it at sunset on a Föhn day; these cluster in spring and late autumn, though a clear October evening also draws a crowd up the hill. Allow two or three weeks to plan, and keep a few evenings open if you would like to chase the mountain view.
What does the session in Munich look like?
Beforehand we agree the exact spot, the time and your signal by phone or email. The photographer arrives fifteen minutes early, settles thirty to fifty metres away and waits. At the Monopteros that means lower down the slope; on the Olympiaberg, just below the summit with a clear line to you. After the question the photographer comes over, and we spend thirty minutes on portraits nearby. A first set of photographs reaches you the same evening, and the finished gallery holds 35 edited images.

We are visiting Munich. How do we scout the spot?
You do not need to. We send photographs of the exact position and a short description of how to get there from your hotel. If you have a free hour the day before, a quick look helps, but the arrangements are made by phone or email and work without a meeting.
Can we plan for the Alps in the background?
Plan for a window rather than a date. Tell us which evenings you are free over a week or two, and once the forecast shows a Föhn we fix the Olympiaberg. If no Föhn arrives, the proposal still goes ahead with a wide view over the city instead.
Is the Oktoberfest a problem for a proposal?
Only near the Theresienwiese and in the centre. The Englischer Garten and the Olympiapark stay usable during the fortnight. Expect packed trains and allow extra travel time. If you want the proposal on the festival grounds themselves, expect crowds and noise, and plan the signal accordingly.
