More than any other session we run, a couple photoshoot in the Black Forest is planned around the previous evening’s forecast. From late September into November, clear and still nights leave fog lying in the valleys, and at eight hundred to a thousand metres you can stand in morning sun above a sea of cloud. It cannot be tied to a single date, but it can be tied to a window of a few days, and we make the call the night before. Outside those weeks the region shows a quieter side, with a lake at dusk, a stream under firs or a farmhouse on a slope. Because the forest stretches for a hundred and sixty kilometres, the session stays within one of its three areas, and the ninety minutes go to two places connected on foot.
For the fog, come between late September and mid-November, meet before sunrise, which in October means around seven, and be finished before the fog burns off at about nine. For warm evening light by the water, May, June and September are best. In August the shores of the Titisee and the Schluchsee are busy, though individual bays stay empty. In winter there is snow on the heights, and short paths and warm clothing matter more than the hour. For October, book a window of dates rather than one day.
What does the session in Black Forest look like?
In the north we meet in the dark at the Mummelsee car park and climb by headtorch to the Hornisgrinde, crossing the raised bog on the boardwalk at the top. There we photograph sunrise over the fog, then walk back down to the lake as the light softens. In the south the session begins at a quiet bay on the Schluchsee and follows the shore path to the next stretch of forest. Either way we stay on the paths, because the land is protected. Sturdy shoes are essential, and so is a jacket, even in summer. Your 40 edited photographs follow within 48 to 72 hours.

What if the fog does not appear during our window?
Then the session still happens, just at a different hour. We check each evening within the agreed window whether an inversion is forming. If none arrives by the final day, we move the session to an evening by a lake or at a viewpoint where the low light falls across the ridges.
How early do we have to get up for a sunrise session?
That depends on where you are staying. From Baden-Baden it is roughly forty-five minutes along the Schwarzwaldhochstraße to the Mummelsee, plus the climb to the Hornisgrinde. In October that means leaving at about half past five. Staying closer to the high road buys you an extra half hour of sleep.
We are based in Freiburg. Which part of the forest suits us?
The south. The Titisee is reachable through the Höllental in well under an hour, and the Schluchsee a little further on. Both work for an evening session by the water. The fog-above-the-valley mornings happen in the south too, from viewpoints at similar heights, and we pick one according to the forecast.
