Hamburg gives a personal branding photographer two very different settings within walking distance of each other. Indoors there is your own workplace, which shows what you actually do. Outdoors there is brick, water and the harbour, a setting that reads unmistakably as Hamburg without looking like a postcard, as long as it is treated as background rather than subject. Two and a half hours covers both: a portrait, scenes at work and frames in conversation, each shot in portrait, landscape and square. The order matters. Because the weather here changes quickly, the indoor scenes are fixed and the outdoor ones are kept flexible, so a passing shower does not derail the session.
From April to October the outdoor frames fit easily into a working day, and in summer into the early evening too. In winter they belong around midday, with the indoor scenes before or after. Hold the briefing on visual language and intended use about two weeks before the session, so clothes, props and places are settled and any colleagues needed for conversation scenes are available.
What does the session in Hamburg look like?
The session starts where you work, whether that is an office, a workshop or a coworking space, and the at-work and conversation scenes happen there. Then we head outside for portraits, ideally on foot — a canal in the Speicherstadt or the harbour edge, for instance. Outdoors it is camera only, with no stands or lights, since a commercial production with a rig in the Speicherstadt has to be registered. Sixty edited images, cropped for every platform you use, follow within a week.

FAQ — Personal branding in Hamburg
Can I use Speicherstadt photographs on my business website?
Photographs taken from its public streets and bridges without any rig are straightforward, and use on your own website is part of the package. Once lighting, stands or a larger crew are involved, registration with HHLA is required, which is why we work there with the camera alone.
I work from home. Where do the at-work scenes happen?
Either at home, if the room suits, or in a café or coworking space where you could plausibly work — most Hamburg neighbourhoods have several. What matters is that the place fits what you do convincingly, and we settle that during the briefing.
How many outfits should I bring?
Two or three, matched to the three situations. For the waterfront frames, bring a layer that sits well in wind, because outdoors in Hamburg there is nearly always more breeze than you expect. Solid mid-tones work better against red brick than patterns.
