Weeks 28 to 34 is not an approximate guide but the window in which both things are true. Earlier than that the bump often does not read clearly in a photograph — you can see it if you know what you are looking at, and not otherwise. Later, standing, walking and holding a position get tiring, and that shows in a frame. With twins the window moves two or three weeks earlier, which is regularly realised too late in the planning.

Whether this happens outdoors or at home is a question of weather and season rather than of style. Outdoors in the hour before sunset the light is soft and comes from the side, which gives shape; at home by a large window it is softer and more even and requires no coat. Either way it runs seventy-five minutes, partners and older siblings are included, and the thirty edited photographs are ready for you two to three days after the session.

What you wear should show the shape rather than hide it. A combination that works is one close-fitting piece — a knitted dress, a plain fitted top — and one flowing dress or shirt that moves in the wind or as you walk. Plain, quiet colours suit both outdoors and indoors, and a partner can match the palette without copying it. Comfortable shoes for getting there and a second pair for the pictures are sensible rather than fussy, and a water bottle belongs in the bag. Breaks can be taken at any point; they are already in the schedule.

Because the window is only six weeks wide, it pays to enquire during the second trimester. Give the approximate week in the form and say whether you prefer outdoors or home, and a fixed price comes back by phone or email. If the date becomes impossible for health reasons, it is moved at no cost, which the terms state explicitly. The photographs are for your private use, and none is published without your separate written consent.
